The Wien Rennweg stop is a traffic junction in Vienna's 3rd district, Landstrasse . It is located at the confluence of the Aspang Railway with the main line of the Vienna S-Bahn .
location
The stop is located in the cut of the former Wiener Neustädter Canal under the intersection of the eponymous Rennweg with the Ungargasse or Fasangasse, where the tram lines O ( Praterstern - Raxstraße ) and 71 (Börsegasse - Kaiserebersdorf ) cross. The bus line 77A has its terminus here.

prehistory
During the first half of the 19th century, the so-called Weberschleuse of the Wiener Neustädter Canal was located at the location of today's Rennweg stop, just before the bridge that crossed the canal on the Rennweg . After the Vienna Canal Harbor was relocated to the area of the later Aspang station in 1849, the disused canal bed was gradually transformed into a railway body.
First stop
The first Rennweg station was built in 1883 as part of the connecting railway and was used by passenger trains until 1943. From 1898 to 1918 it was also part of the outer network of the Vienna light rail network . In the Second World War , the connecting line was badly damaged and the station had to be removed in 1945.
Second stop
In the course of the introduction of the rapid transit railway in Vienna, it was decided to build a new Rennweg stop, which opened on May 23, 1971. As a result, the Aspang station was demolished in 1977. The new Rennweg stop consisted of a side and a central platform. However, the latter was never used as such, as a third track was never laid.
Third stop
Between 2000 and 2002, the airport express train was expanded to double-track from the branching off from the main S-Bahn line to Vienna-Schwechat Airport , to enable a 15-minute cycle between the city center and the airport. This was later created in the form of the City Airport Train , which, however, does not stop at Rennweg.
At the same time, the Rennweg train station was completely rebuilt. Instead of the previous side platforms, a central platform and barrier-free access were built. An underground flyover structure was also installed to thread the trains coming from the airport onto the main line, and a shopping, dining and office center was created above the platforms. The Rennweg station was abandoned for 16 months between 2001 and 2002 due to construction work and was one of the first Vienna S-Bahn stations in the new design after it reopened. It has a central platform with two 160 m long platform edges.
Underground connection
Already at the second station a possible connection to the subway network was considered and an exit in the direction of the planned subway station was built. However, this was filled in again because these plans were not implemented.
In 2007, the U-Bahn package decided to extend the U2 subway line from Karlsplatz to Gudrunstraße with a station on Rennweg. In 2014, however, the expansion package was changed and the U2 is now being extended to Matzleinsdorfer Platz instead . The Rennweg station could be connected to the underground by the U5 line from 2030 .
