A narrow-gauge network of around 221 kilometers in length was maintained under the name Insterburger Kleinbahnen , starting from the Insterburg railway junction in the eastern part of the Prussian province of East Prussia .

Insterburger Kleinbahn-AG

On June 25, 1900, the Insterburger Kleinbahn-AG was founded, in which the Prussian state, the province of East Prussia , the districts of Insterburg, Niederung, Ragnit and Tilsit as well as the railway construction company Lenz & Co. were involved.

Trunk network

On August 1, 1902, the first sections with a gauge of 750 mm were opened. Starting from the Kleinbahnhof Insterburg , which was 1.15 kilometers west of the state train station, a line led south into the Darkehmen district (1938-1946 Angerapp district ) via Warnascheln (1938-1946 Warnheide ) to Trempen (32 km) with a branch from Warnascheln to Albrechtau / Piontken (1938–1946 Waldkerme , 10 km).

In the urban area of Insterburg, the northern route initially followed the state railway towards Tilsit . The Gumbinner Strasse stop (formerly Bahnhofstrasse) near the “Hauptbahnhof” was served. On the other side of the Angerapp river was the small train station Luxenberg, where the line turned to the east and along the Inster reached the terminal station of Kraupischken (1938–1946 Breitenstein , 38 km) in the Ragnit district . About 1 km before that in Moulinen was the branch of the railway line to the north towards Ragnit Kleinbahnhof (27 km) on the Memel . The trains to Ragnit departed separately from the Kraupischken terminus . The map of the course book shown only shows the southern section.

An expansion of the network followed on November 12, 1902 with the branch branching off in Luxenberg to Groß Skaisgirren (1938-1946 Kreuzingen , 36 km) in the Niederung district on the Tilsit – Königsberg state railway . It was divided into Juckeln (1918-1946 Buchhof ), where a strand branched off via Mehlauken (1938-1946 Liebenfelde ) - also on the Tilsit – Königsberg state railway - to Piplin (1938-1946 Timberhafen , 28 km) in the Labiau district .

During the First World War, a branch line from Kauschen (1938–1946 Horstenau ) to Wirbeln (17 km) was opened on March 27, 1915 and the cross-connection from Warnascheln to Nordenburg Kleinbahnhof (26 km) in the Gerdauen district on June 26, 1917 , where there was a connection to the state railway and to the narrow-gauge Rastenburg small railways .

In the urban area of Insterburg, a branch line from Luxenberg to Pregeltor was opened on September 1, 1909 , which initially also served passenger traffic. Two port railways, which had been laid out with three tracks, formed the end; from August 19, 1926 a 4 km long line from the small train station Insterburg to the Pregelhafen in the west of the city and from July 1, 1933 in Ragnit a 3 km long port railway.

The Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (ODEG) took over the management .

Other railway companies

Insterburger Kleinbahn-AG built and managed the following small railways in northern East Prussia, one of which was standard gauge and one was partially electrified:

Together with its main network of 223 km, the Insterburger Kleinbahn-AG thus owned a rail network of 358 km route length.

Establishment of the East Prussian Kleinbahnen AG

The AG for Transport tried to reduce the costs of managing its railways by streamlining the organization. The following small railway companies, the majority of which were owned by them, were merged with Insterburger Kleinbahn-AG with effect from June 30, 1924, which at the same time became Ostpreußische Kleinbahnen AG :

Local railroad Track width
mm
Length
km
date
Königsberg small train 750 58.6 January 15, 1900
Lycker Kleinbahn-AG 1000 48.0 October 22, 1913
Ortelsburger Kleinbahn 600 15.4 June 16, 1920
Rastenburger small railways 750 127.3 May 1, 1898
Schloßberger Kleinbahnen formerly Pillkaller Kleinbahnen 1000 60.8 December 24, 1901
Treuburger Kleinbahnen formerly Oletzkoer Kleinbahnen 1000 43.1 September 18, 1911
Wehlau – Friedlander Kreisbahnen 750 65.8 April 9, 1898
Kleinbahn Wöterkeim – Schippenbeil 1435 5.0 June 30, 1907 (only from 1930)

The new company then comprised 777 km of mostly narrow-gauge lines, only 21 km had standard-gauge tracks. The above list contains the gauge, total route length and the opening date of the first leg.

Insterburger Kleinbahnen after 1924

From 1924 on, the name Insterburger Kleinbahnen only refers to the routes of the main network, which then grew by 7 km with two port railways.

Passenger transport by rail became less and less important, especially since the East German Railway Company set up parallel lines with its buses, which achieved significantly shorter travel times than the narrow-gauge railways. Rail traffic only picked up again during the Second World War. The rail network itself was expanded again when the front was getting closer and closer in the winter of 1944/45 and the Deutsche Reichsbahn could no longer reach the Schlossberg (Pillkallen) area. Finally, a last train drove back from there on the partly newly laid narrow-gauge railway via Insterburg and Nordenburg to Rastenburg.

With the network of the Rastenburger Kleinbahnen - 127 km in length - there had been a connection in Nordenburg since 1917. The result was the largest coherent network of narrow-gauge railways with a gauge of 750 mm in the German Reich, which with a circumference of around 350 km even exceeded that of Mügeln in Saxony.
