The first general savings bank was founded in Poland as early as 1919 . In 1929, the Polish Ministry of Finance decided to set up another care fund with the character of a universal bank, primarily intended for permanent financial investments. On this basis, Bank Polska Kasa Opieki SA , or Bank Pekao for short , was founded on March 17, 1929 .

Eugeniusz Bączkowski became the first director of the bank . The bank's field of activity encompassed lending and deposit business, including international money transactions. One of the main tasks of Bank Pekao was to provide Polish emigrants with financial services, which is why their own branches were also opened in cities outside Poland. This included Paris , where the bank first opened in February 1930. In 1931, Banco Polaco PKO , founded as a subsidiary, followed in Buenos Aires . The establishment of its own branch in Tel-Aviv took place on May 15, 1933 and in March 1939 a branch was opened in the USA . With the beginning of the Second World War , the bank's head office was temporarily relocated to Paris in order to be able to continue to manage the assets of foreign banks. In the further course of the war he was relocated to Toulouse and later London . The original headquarters in Warsaw were used by the German occupiers to manage the remaining funds. After the end of the war, the administration of Bank Pekao resumed its work in Warsaw in 1946.

In 1948, the banking landscape in Poland was greatly changed by the installation of the socialist regime . The credit institutions have now been reorganized into specialist banks . The tasks of Bank Pekao were the administration and the transfer of foreign private funds to Poland. The branch network abroad was therefore further expanded, for example in New York in 1948 , in Toronto in 1956 , and later also in the GDR and Austria . In 1969 the Polish Ministry of Finance took over full management of the bank. In international business, Bank Pekao also participated in other banks. In 1978 she became a partner in the Central European Commercial Bank .

After the system change in 1989, banking law was also redesigned as part of the Polish economic reform and the banks were given more freedom again. Marian Kanton, the then President of Bank Pekao , refocused the bank on banking services of all kinds. On the way to privatization of the bank in 1996, Bank Pekao was divided into four individual companies, which included Bank Depozytowo-Kredytowy in Lublin , Pomorski Bank Kredytowy in Szczecin and Powszechny Bank Gospodarczy in Łódź . The company's shares were admitted to public trading in May 1998 and first listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in June. As the first provider in Poland, Bank Pekao created the possibility of electronic banking for its customers in October . On January 1, 1999, the four individual companies that had only been created in 1996 were merged again.

On June 23, 1999, a takeover agreement for 52.09 percent of the shares was signed by a consortium of Unicredit and Allianz and completed on August 3 of the same year.

In 2016, the Italian Unicredit put its shares in Bank Pekao up for sale for EUR 3.5 billion. At the end of the year it was announced that 32.8 percent of the equity stake would be transferred to the PZU and the PFR (both state-controlled) for a purchase price of 10.6 billion zlotys . The final transaction took place on June 7, 2017.
