from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The qualification for the men's European basketball championship 2022 started almost five years before the actual final round in 2022 with the pre-qualification in November 2017 and will end in February 2021. The European Championship scheduled for September 2021 was postponed by one year to September 2022 by FIBA on April 9, 2020 due to the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
For the first time, all 24 participants will have to go through the qualification competition; there is no automatic start right for Olympic or World Cup participants like in previous European championships. However, the four hosts of the 2021 European Championship, Germany, Georgia, Italy and the Czech Republic, are guaranteed to participate. However, these national teams still take part in the qualification, out of competition.
1st round pre-qualification : The nine national teams that failed in the pre-qualification for the 2019 World Cup or did not even take part were divided into three different pots according to a seeding list. During the draw, the teams were divided into three groups, with exactly one selection from one of the different lottery pots being drawn into each group of three teams. In the three groups, the teams played a round-robin tournament with a round trip, so that each team played six group games. The group winners and the best runner-up in the group qualified for the second round of the pre-qualification.
2nd round pre-qualification : The four qualifiers from the 1st EM pre-qualification round were joined by the eight group bottom from the qualifying round for the 2019 World Cup . These 12 national teams formed four groups of 3 teams each, from which the group winners qualified for the 3rd round of the pre-qualification.
3rd round pre-qualification : The 3rd pre-qualification round can be referred to as the "lucky loser round", since all nations that failed in the previous rounds have the opportunity here in four groups of three to qualify for the decisive qualifying round ("qualifiers").
Qualification final : 32 national teams will take part in the final qualification phase; The eight winners of the pre -qualification will be joined by the 24 participants in the main round qualification for the 2019 World Cup , who will determine the 24 participants in the European Basketball Championship in eight groups of four. The three best in each group qualify for the tournament.
