The volleyball department of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen was founded in 1969. The men played in the 1st Bundesliga from 1978 to 1991 . The first women's team, the BayerVolleys, played in the 1st Bundesliga from 1995 to 2010 and currently in the 2nd Bundesliga .

The squad for the 2019/20 season consists of 15 players. Still part of the squad Katharina Molitor , the world champion in javelin throw of Beijing in 2015 , already in the 2008/09 season had played for Leverkusen in the first Bundesliga. There are also some beach volleyball players in the team. Leverkusen mainly relies on young German players born between 1996 and 2001.

Head coach is Leverkusen's former assistant coach Tigin Yaglioglu .

history

The men's team at Bayer Leverkusen became German champions in 1979, 1989 and 1990 and won the DVV Cup in 1988 before being transferred to SV Bayer Wuppertal in 1991 , which won the DVV Cup again in 1995. The women's team was founded in 1991.

Bundesliga

The women of Bayer Leverkusen have played in the first division since 1995 and were runner-up in 1999 and 2004. In the seasons 2005/06 and 2006/07 they did not get beyond the playdown round and each had to be content with ninth place. In the 2007/08 season they reached the championship round again and finished sixth. In the 2008/09 season they ended up in twelfth place.

In the 2009/10 season, the club's first women’s team had sovereignly qualified for the first division and was also reported, but had to be withdrawn afterwards because Bayer could not raise tens of thousands of euros to finance the season. Almost all players, including national players, switched to other clubs. The 2009/10 season, which was played in the second division north , played the first women's team extremely successfully and secured the championship early on, but had to forego promotion to the first division for financial reasons. The same succeeded in the same season of the first men's team, they also became champions of the second division and had to be promoted to A! B! C Titans Berg for financial reasons . Cede land . In the 2010/11 season , the women's team again won the championship of the second division north and this time claimed promotion to the first division. The second division eligibility of the men's team, which won the 2010/11 runner-up, was transferred to TSG Solingen Volleys , to which most of the Leverkusen players also switched. In 2011/12 , the women only finished penultimate in the Bundesliga and had to leave the first division after a year. In 2012/13 and 2015/16 the volleyball players were champions of the 2nd Bundesliga North, but once again failed to exercise their right to promotion to the first Bundesliga. In the 2016/17 , 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons , the TSV team was runner-up.

DVV Cup

In the 2003/04 season , the Leverkusen women lost the semi-finals against eventual cup winners USC Münster with 2: 3. The same duel took place a year later at the final in Bonn and Bayer was again defeated. In the 2005/06 season Leverkusen was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Vilsbiburg and in the 2006/07 semifinals they were eliminated against Schweriner SC . In the 2007/08 season , the Bayer women had to admit defeat to Dresdner SC in the round of 16 . In the 2008/09 season they lost in the quarterfinals against Vilsbiburg. As a second division, the Leverkusen women were eliminated against the same opponent in the round of 16 in 2009/10 .
