Benjamin Appl
Benjamin Appl (* 26. June 1982 in Regensburg ) is a German opera - concert and Lied singer with the vocal range baritone .
biography
Appl received his first vocal training from the Regensburger Domspatzen and completed his vocal training (with Edith Wiens and Helmut Deutsch, among others ) at the Munich University of Music and Theater and the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding with distinction , in addition to successfully studying business administration . From 2010 to 2013 he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London in the singing class of Rudolf Piernay . Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau , with whom he studied privately as the last student until 2012, had a major influence on his artistic career . In 2016 Benjamin Appl signed a long-term exclusive contract with Sony Classical and received the Gramophone Award for New Artist of the Year 2016.

Appl's opera engagements include Count (Conte) in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Guglielmo in Mozart's Così fan tutte in London, the title role in Benjamin Britten's Owen Wingrave in Banff , Aeneas in Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at the Aldeburgh Festival and Brighton Festival , the Minister in Johann Strauss ' Wiener Blut in Munich, the Schaunard in Puccini's La Bohème with the Munich Radio Orchestra and the Baron Tusenbach in Eötvös ' Tri Sestri in the Munich Prinzregententheater and at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden . In the summer of 2014 he sang the role of Leo in Bernhard Gander's Life on the Edge of the Milky Way at the Bregenz Festival , a composition commissioned by the Wiener Konzerthaus , Wien Modern and the Bregenz Festival. He worked with international conductors.

Honors
Appl received the Schubert Prize of the German Schubert Society in 2012. He was also funded by the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation “Live Music Now” and the German National Academic Foundation, and in 2003 received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Association . 2014 Appl was for the Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme of the British radio station BBC and selected as "ECHO Rising Star" of the European Concert Hall Organization. For his solo album "Heimat" he received the Prix Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Best Song Singer) 2017/18 from the Académie du disque lyrique Orphées d'Or.
repertoire
Benjamin Appl has a large repertoire of art song, but it also spans operas and concerts from the Renaissance to the present day. Some contemporary composers also composed works for him, such as Kit Armstrong, Marian Ingoldsby, György Kurtág , Nico Muhly , Susan Oswell and Matthias Pintscher . For the Konzerthaus Dortmund he worked with György Kurtág in several intensive phases of work on his Hölderlin chants , which were then performed in a special discussion concert in Dortmund in February 2020.
Teaching
Benjamin Appl has been teaching at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London as professor of German song since September 2016 . He has taught in master classes and workshops around the world.

Special projects
In autumn 2019 Benjamin Appl presented his own radio program on BBC Radio 3 with the title "A Singer's World" , in which he gave an insight into the life of a classic singer of the 21st century . In spring 2020, Appl played the lead role in a new film production entitled "Breaking Music" , which was shot in Buenos Aires and Berlin and deals with tango , but also with the similarities and differences between tango and German art song.
