Berjosowski ( Russian Берёзовский ) is a city in the Kemerovo Oblast ( Russia ) with 47,279 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the northern part of the Kuzbass , about 35 km northeast of the oblast capital Kemerovo . The climate is continental.

Berjosowski forms an independent urban district , which is surrounded by the territory of the Kemerovo Rajon . In addition to the actual city with its districts Kurganowka ( Кургановка ) and Oktjabrski ( Октябрьский ), two villages with a total of 2,231 inhabitants belong to the urban district. The total population of the Berjosowski urban district is 49,510.

Beryozovsky is located on the railway line Kemerovo - Barsas - anzhero-sudzhensk . The stations are called Saboishchik ( Забойщик , near Kurganovka) and Birjulinskaja ( Бирюлинская , near Oktyabrsky).

history

Berjosowski (from Russian берёза / berjosa for " birch " ) was built from 1949 as a miners' settlement for the new coal mine of the same name and in 1956 received the status of an urban-type settlement . On January 11, 1965, it was combined with the nearby Kurganowka and Oktjabrski settlements, which were also built around coal pits (urban-type settlements since 1944 and 1964, respectively) and received city rights.

Culture, education and sights

A local history museum with a focus on (military) history has existed in the city since 1984.

economy

The main branch of industry is coal mining with the Pervomaiskaya ( Первомайская ) and Beryosovskaya ( Берёзовская ) pits and the Chernigovets open-cast mine ( Черниговец , one of the largest in Russia, west of the city).

There are also deposits of iron ore , gold and building materials in the area , some of which are exploited. Forestry and wood processing play a subordinate role.
