Bolívar is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Bolívar is located in the province of Vélez in the south of Santander in the Colombian Andes at an altitude of 2100 meters and has an average annual temperature of around 17 ° C. The municipality borders Landázuri and Cimitarra in the north, Vélez and Guavatá in the east, El Peñón , Sucre , La Belleza and Puerto Boyacá in the Boyacá department in the south and Puerto Berrío in the Antioquia department in the west .

history

Bolívar was founded in 1844 by the priest Pedro Antonio Castañeda and the landowner Ramón Palomino. In 1846 the place received the status of a parish and in 1887 the status of a parish.

economy

The main industry in Bolívar is agriculture . In addition to cattle production , the cultivation of cocoa , coffee , bananas , sugar cane , corn , cassava and fruit play an important role.
