history

Australia's first farm was established at Farm Cove in 1788. Although the farm was unsuccessful, the soil has been cultivated since then, making it more and more fertile.

The botanical garden was established on this site in 1816, it was part of the governor's garden. A long history of collecting and studying plants began in 1817 with the young colony's first botanist, Charles Frazer , who successfully grew nearly 3,000 plants from Great Britain. The Sydney Botanical Gardens is the oldest scientific institution in Australia and played an important role in the settlement of plants from other regions. Charles Moore, director from 1848 to 1896, made a great contribution to the development of the botanical garden as we know it today. In this way he solved the problems of bad soil, water and lack of money.

In 1862, the first Sydney Zoo opened in the middle of the botanical garden. In 1879 a large part of the garden was used for the construction of the Garden Exhibition Palace , which impressed over a million visitors with a 30-meter-high dome during the Sydney International Exhibition (1879) . The building was destroyed by fire in 1882. The garden was well established by the end of the 19th century.

During the First World War and especially the Depression of the 1930s, the botanical garden fell into disrepair. It was not until 1945 that the garden was rebuilt under director Robert Anderson. The garden has been labeled 'Royal' since 1959. Since 1965, many parts of the garden have been redesigned and expanded, e.g. B. the tropical greenhouse, the rose garden, the oriental garden, the fern garden and many more. Today the botanical garden is supported by the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation .

The triathlon competitions of the 2000 Summer Olympics took place in the botanical garden .

The final scene of Matrix Revolutions was filmed in the Sydney Botanical Gardens.
