Buenaventura is a port city and municipality in the Colombian department of Valle del Cauca . The administrative area also includes the offshore Pacific island of Malpelo .

The municipality has the special status of a district, Distrito Especial, Industrial, Portuario, Biodiverso y Ecoturístico de Buenaventura ( special industrial, port, biodiversity and ecotourism district of Buenaventura ). This is also the official name of the community.

Buenaventura is located on the Pacific coast at the foot of the Andes in the Valle del Cauca department and forms the Occidente sub-region . The city center is on Cascajal Island . The distance to Cali , the capital of the department, is 145 km. Buenaventura is the largest municipality in Valle del Cauca in terms of area. The municipality borders in the north on El Litoral de San Juan in the Departamento del Chocó , in the east on Calima , Dagua , Cali and Jamundí , in the south on Buenos Aires and López de Micay in the Departamento del Cauca and in the west on the Pacific.

The municipality of Buenaventura has 432,501 inhabitants, of which 398,624 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Buenaventura was founded on July 14, 1540 by Juan de Ladrilleros on behalf of Pascual de Andagoya 16 km from today's city center and named after Saint Bonaventura of Bagnoregio . The colonial city was destroyed by indigenous peoples before 1600, but was later rebuilt.

Sports

Buenaventura was home to the short-lived club Pacífico FC , who played their home games at the Polideportivo El Cristal stadium, which has a capacity of around 15,000. Pacífico FC played in the Colombian second division in 2010 and 2011 .

Infrastructure

The development of the important port only began with the opening of the Panama Canal . Today the city is the most important Colombian port on the Pacific coast with a turnover of around 8 million tons of goods annually (2016). The export of coffee and other agricultural products such as sugar, wood and shrimp, but also metals such as gold and platinum from the Chocó are of particular importance .

Buenaventura has one airport, Aeropuerto Gerardo Tobar López ( IATA code : BUN ).
