Bumblebee is an American action and sci-fi feature film by Travis Knight from the year 2018 . The film is a spin-off of the Transformers series of films in which the human lead roles are played by Hailee Steinfeld , Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and John Cena . The world premiere took place in Berlin on December 10, 2018 , and the film was released in German cinemas on December 20, 2018.

On the planet Cybertron, the Autobots are on the verge of defeat by the Decepticons. Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots resistance, orders the retreat and orders B-127 to flee to Earth in order to build a base where the Autobots should regroup.
B-127 reached Earth in 1987 and landed in the middle of a Jack Burns military exercise. Burns thinks he's an enemy intruder, and B-127 flees and is pursued by the military. On the run, the Decepticon Blitzwing, who followed the B-127 back to Earth, joins them to find out where Optimus Prime and the Autobots have retreated. During the battle between the two Transformers, Burns' unit gets caught between the front lines, with Burns surviving seriously injured. B-127 defeats Blitzwing, but the B-127's speech and memory module are so badly damaged that it collapses and shortly before it scans an old VW Beetle .
Adolescent Charlie Watson lives in Brighton Falls with her mother, brother Otis and stepfather Ron. Charlie is still processing her father's sudden death, which is why relationships with her family are not the best. She tries to restore the Corvette C1 of her deceased father and in search of spare parts discovers an old yellow VW Beetle in a junkyard, which is given to her by the junkyard owner Hank for her 18th birthday. Starting the Beetle, however, unknowingly activates an Autobot bearing signal, which is received by the two Decepticons Shatter and Dropkick, which follow the signal. When Charlie inspects the Beetle in her garage, the car turns into a B-127. The two become friends and she names B-127 "Bumblebee".
In the meantime, Shatter and Dropkick have arrived on earth. Their arrival, however, was noticed by Agent Burns and his special unit from Sector 7, who can intercept the intruders. The Decepticons, however, pose as peacekeepers who are looking for the fugitive criminal B-127. Since the bearing signal is now deactivated, they ask people for help. Burns is skeptical of the cooperation, but scientist Dr. Powell offers the help and leads the Decepticons into the base of Sector 7.
Meanwhile, Charlie's neighbor Memo, with whom she became friends, also knows about Bumblebee. Bumblebee was able to restore part of its memory after Charlie activated a message from Optimus Prime explaining Bumblebee's mission while attempting a repair. Since the speech module is still defective, Bumblebee communicates with Charlie using songs on the radio. One day, when Bumblebee triggers a short circuit in the Watsons house, causing a power outage in the area, the Decepticons and Sector 7 are able to locate him. Charlie, Memo and Bumblebee are then captured by the Decepticons and the military. Bumblebee is drugged and taken to the base while Charlie and Memo are released.
Back home, Charlie and Memo decide to help Bumblebee. During the interrogation of Bumblebee, the Decepticons come across the news from Optimus Prime and learn that the Autobots are coming to Earth. The present Dr. Powell sees the real face of the Decepticons and is able to warn Burns just before he is killed by them. The Decepticons leave the incapacitated Bumblebee behind and go to a transmitter mast in the harbor to call more Decepticons from there. Charlie and Memo have watched the scene and can reactivate Bumblebee with the help of stun guns, which also restores his memories. Bumblebee beats back the arriving Burns in a fight and drives to the harbor with Charlie.
Bumblebee and the two Decepticons meet in the harbor. While Shatter tries to activate the transmitter mast, Bumblebee fights against Dropkick. Charlie sneaks up on the mast to disable the impending transmission of the signal. Surprisingly, Burns appears in an attack helicopter and shoots Shatter. Meanwhile, Bumblebee was able to destroy Dropkick and save Burns' crashing helicopter after it was damaged by Shatter. Shatter notices how Charlie wants to break off the signal transmission. Bumblebee rushes to Charlie's aid and destroys the dock in the fight against Shatter. The tidal wave drives a ship into the harbor, burying Shatter and destroying it. Burns warns Charlie that the Army will be looking for Bumblebee and lets them go. Charlie says goodbye to Bumblebee after realizing the Autobots need him to fight the Decepticons. Bumblebee scans and transforms a yellow 1970 Chevrolet Camaro .
Eventually the Autobots reach Earth and Optimus Prime thanks B-127 for his help. In Charlie's voice, he replies that his name is "Bumblebee". Charlie is reconciled with her family and drives her father's restored Corvette towards the sunset.
Background and production
On February 12, 2016, Paramount announced the production of a sixth film in the Transformers series, which was originally due to be released on June 8, 2018. At the same time, it was confirmed that it should be a spin-off of the Autobot character Bumblebee. Christina Hodson was confirmed for the script at the end of 2016 and Travis Knight was hired to direct . In an interview at the end of 2017, Knight said that Bumblebee would differ from Michael Bay's previous heroic Transformers films and instead tell a coming-of-age story.
In early June 2017, Hailee Steinfeld was announced as the female lead actress , who already played the lead role in the multi-nominated late-western True Grit (2010). In July, the then 21-year-old Jorge Lendeborg Jr. , who played a supporting role in Spider-Man: Homecoming , was confirmed for the male lead . Other roles were cast in August, including John Cena , who will play an unspecified role. According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura , no other Transformers should appear in the film with the exception of Bumblebee, but in an interview in October 2017, Peter Cullen said he would speak Optimus Prime in the film. The two speaking roles of the antagonists were cast in July 2018 with Angela Bassett ( Black Panther ) and Justin Theroux ( The Leftovers ).
Filming for Bumblebee began on July 31, 2017 and ended on November 10. The film was shot in Los Angeles , San Francisco , Santa Cruz , Vallejo and in the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California .

The German synchronization of the film was done by Interopa Film GmbH from Berlin, which was also responsible for the last five films in the Transformers film series. The dialogue book is by Tobias Meister and Stefan Fredrich . Tobias Neumann directed the dialogue .

Reviews
Bumblebee received mostly mixed to positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 91 percent of the 240 reviews collected are positive, while at Metacritic only 66 percent of 39 reviews are positive.
For Antje Wessels "[the film] has almost nothing to do with the soulless material battles of the" Transformers "series and instead is a ravishing adventure full of wit and emotion". Nevertheless, for Wessels it is "primarily a predictable film", which comes to a standstill when the "Bumblebee-chasing Decepticons Dropkick and Shatter [...] appear" and "would have worked a lot better without the conventional use of adversaries".
Sebastian Stumbek from Moviebreak.de judges that "narrative [...] no film in the series has been smeared with fame" and that viewers should "expect nothing else from Bumblebee [...]". Nevertheless, "[the film] starts in the right places in order to at least position itself in the form of a well-intentioned, nice family blockbuster that you can give a chance".
Daniel Krüger from Musikexpress.de , for whom director Travis Knight is "the wrong man for this film", expresses himself much more negatively . For Krüger "[Travis Knight] plays on safety and is allowed to shine at least a little, because his film has something like a heart compared to Michael Bays", but "you have [...] seen every scene [...] just as often like heard the soundtrack ”. “Bumblebee is not a bad film, but it is one off the drawing board”, which “Bay's insanity in many predictable scenes still could not have hurt”.
