The population is 1,706,352 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 21.39% and was therefore very high. Buxar has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 70.14% in 2011, an increase of almost 14 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is slightly below the national average, but above that of Bihar. Almost 93% of the population are Hindus and around 6% are Muslim .
