The origin of the place name (Portuguese: cachoeirinha means "small waterfall ") comes from a small waterfall, which was located near a bridge that led over the Rio Gravataí. That waterfall was a hindrance to the navigability of the river, especially during periods of drought .

At the beginning of the 20th century , the 43 km² of the Cachoeirinha district were privately owned and formed a district of the city of Gravataí. With his death in 1923, his heirs began to divide and sell the estates.

In 1925 a steel bridge was built, which became a symbol of the city.

This happened as part of the dredging of the river bed and the associated transformation of the river into a canal . With its opening, the way should be prepared for shipping . At that time it was of great importance as a means of transport between the cities of Santo Antônio da Patrulha , Gravataí and Porto Alegre .
