Cervo is an Italian municipality with 1138 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Imperia in Liguria and is located on the eastern slope of the Gulf of Diano Marina . The municipality is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Infrastructure

The old town lies on a mountain spur, and on the mountain side it had a secure entrance through a castle, which today houses the city museum. Due to the steep incline, the medieval old town is almost entirely a pedestrian zone. Only a few streets can be used with small cars (mostly so-called Ape - "three-wheelers").

This contrasts with the western and southern parts of the three square kilometer village, through which the Via Aurelia , a coastal road that has been known since ancient times , runs.

As a car-free city with medieval fortresses, Cervo belongs to the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Today Cervo, which lies between Andora and San Bartolomeo al Mare , is mainly known to culture lovers and campers: on the one hand for the various cultural events such as the International Festival for Chamber Music, on the other hand for its four campsites.

Until 2016, Cervo still had a train station (Cervo-San Bartolomeo) on the old route of the Genoa – Ventimiglia railway line . The station was closed at the beginning of November 2016, as was the coastline, which was largely single-track. The line was replaced by a new line in the hinterland, which is double-tracked throughout and mostly runs in a tunnel. The next train station after the new line has been completed is Diano-San-Pietro (approx. 5–6 km away).

The next motorway junction to European route 80 (A10) is in the neighboring town of San Bartolomeo al Mare.

Attractions

The city is protected on one side of the mountain by an old castle complex, the Castello di Cervo (or Castello dei Clavesana after the building family ), some of which can be visited. The city museum with changing special exhibitions is housed in its palace . A gallery is now housed in the rededicated and partially restored Santa Caterina Church in the old town.
