Christian Friedrich Hornemann was born in Hanover in 1783 as the son of a master tailor. His own son Friedrich Adolf , later also a painter and lithographer, was born in Hanover in 1813.
After Carl von Alten, as commander of the English division , had contributed significantly to the victory of the Allies over the French on June 18, 1815 by defending the La Haye Sainte estate , Christian Friedrich Hornemann made an engraving with a portrait of the man by royal order after the Congress of Vienna General raised to the rank of count .
There were engravings as Horne's Portrait of the count, with which the to enlightenment aspiring educated middle class long before the invention of photography form , could make "an image".
Shortly after George IV , King of Great Britain and Ireland , visited Hanover in 1821 as the first English king for 66 years, Hornemann engraved a bust of the sovereign, subtitled “ dedicated by CF Hornemann”, according to his own drawing “to all loyal followers of the good king” .
According to the address book of the city of Hanover , Christian Friedrich Hornemann can only be identified from 1819 and until 1852 with a permanent seat in the royal seat of the northern German territory, which has now been elevated to the Kingdom of Hanover . During this time the entrepreneur, artist , copper and stone printer, art dealer, publisher, bookseller, deacon and drawing teacher himself was “raised” to the position of purveyor to the court of the Welfenhaus with his publishing house, the CF Hornemannschen Hofkunsthandlung . The award-winning man was in close contact with the so-called “ Pretty Families ” of the capital of the kingdom, to whom the court art dealer was soon able to deliver his own city map of Hanover .
Hornemann also worked temporarily as a deacon of the Aegidienkirche in Hanover.
Posthumously , at the time of the German Empire , Hornemann's copper engraving with the portrait of General von Alten spread again, but this time as an inexpensive reproduction : After "the vast majority of the population" had enthusiastically welcomed the First World War and the city of Hanover had its own World War II collection had started to build up, the Germans and French faced each other again with arms. In the "anniversary year" of 1915, exactly 100 years after the battle of Waterloo, many a hurray patriot who read the Hanoverian history sheets saw the picture of a victor again, the Hornemann portrait of General von Alten.
