Christopher McHugh (born August 31, 1989 in Adelaide ) is an Australian beach volleyball player .

Career

McHugh played with Harrison Peacock at the 2006 U19 World Cup in Bermuda . In 2007 he played his first tournament on the FIVB World Tour with Trent Irwin at the Montreal Open . With him he was also ninth at the U19 World Cup in Mysłowice . From 2008 he played with Sam Boehm . McHugh / Boehm were eliminated early on on the World Tour, while they came ninth at the U21 World Cup in Brighton . The following year they achieved their best result with 17th place at the Mysłowice Open. At the U21 World Cup in Blackpool , McHugh competed with Luke Smith and came in fifth.

In 2010, McHugh formed a new duo with Joshua Slack . McHugh / Slack achieved their best result on the World Tour that year with 17th place in the Open tournaments in Åland and The Hague . On the World Tour 2011 they made it into the top ten for the first time as fifth in the Grand Slam in Moscow . At the end of the year they finished fourth in the Asian Cup. In 2012 they only competed in three Grand Slams in the FIVB series .

In November 2012, McHugh won the Asian Championship with his new partner Isaac Kapa . At the beginning of 2013, McHugh / Kapa celebrated a few tournament victories on the national and continental tour. After a 17th place at the Fuzhou Open and a 25th place at the Grand Slam in Shanghai , they achieved two ninth places on the World Tour in The Hague and Rome . They also qualified for the 2013 World Championships in Stare Jabłonki . Second in the preliminary round and with another win in the first knockout round, they reached the round of 16, in which they had to admit defeat to the Brazilians Pedro / Bruno . They also finished ninth in the Grand Slam in Long Beach before moving up to fifth in Moscow. In 2014 McHugh / Kapa won the Asian Championship, which was also held in China, after finishing ninth at the Grand Slam in Shanghai. On the World Tour there were initially double-digit results, but at the Grand Slam in Klagenfurt they finished third with a win against the Latvians Samoilovs / Šmēdiņš and thus received their first medal at an FIVB tournament.

In 2015 McHugh / Kapa achieved their best World Tour result with fifth place at the Grand Slam in Saint Petersburg . They then took part in the World Cup in the Netherlands ; There they came in second in the group like two years ago and lost again to Brazilian opponents, this time Alison / Bruno . In the following three Grand Slams she got a 17th and two 25th places. They opened the World Tour 2016 with a ninth place in Kisch before they were again Asian champions in front of their home crowd. In the FIVB series, they achieved further top ten results with fifth place at the Cincinnati Open and ninth in the Moscow Grand Slam.

In 2017 McHugh formed a new duo with Damien Schumann . McHugh / Schumann won the tournament in Shepparton, which was only rated with one star , at the beginning of the World Tour . They finished third at the Asian Cup in Thailand . Then they finished ninth in the three-star tournaments in Xiamen and Moscow, before they achieved double-digit results in the top-categorized tournaments in Poreč and Gstaad . Via the AVC preliminary decision, they qualified for the World Cup in Vienna , where they defeated the Americans Gibb / Crabb in the first main round as second in the group, but were eliminated in the round of 16 against their compatriots Dalhausser / Lucena . In April 2018 McHugh / Schumann won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in their native Gold Coast . Then the two separated.

Zachery Schubert has been Schumann's new partner since July 2018 . The best result on the World Tour was a fifth place at the 3-star tournament in Haiyang .
