CitéCréation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CitéCréation ( German  Creative City ) is a French group of artists who create murals in public spaces in the tradition of muralism .

The group has existed since 1978 and had its first successes in Lyon . She now equips building facades and walls around the world with large-scale frescoes , trompe-l'oeils and other wall paintings. The wall artists received numerous recognitions and prizes for their work on the beautification and upgrading of urban and problem areas. CitéCréation founded the German subsidiary DekorativeCity in 2010, based in Berlin-Lichtenberg.

Organization and goals

The group has been organized as a cooperative since 1986 in the French legal form of a Société coopérative et participative (SCOP) . As of 2011, around 70 artists are working in various workshops and studios in the association. The group has two subsidiaries: in Quebec the MuralCréation and in Shanghai the ChuangyiMeicheng . It also has representatives in Jerusalem , Moscow and Yokohama . The former Potsdam subsidiary company CreativeStadt, from which the parent company separated in 2011, is organized as a GmbH .

CitéCréation has set itself the task of evoking emotions with identity-creating murals, livening up history and strengthening the residents' sense of belonging by (re-) conquering the space. One focus of work is the upgrading of districts of social housing . Firms and companies are also using the group's new urban design as a figurehead to strengthen the company profile and to integrate their buildings aesthetically into the urban landscape. City tours in the footsteps of the murals, such as in Lyon, Québec or Jerusalem, contribute to the attractiveness of the cities and their tourism. CitéCréation belongs to the long line of contemporary witnesses and reporters of civilizations who have told the story around the world since the beginning of cave painting . The group wants to continue and revive this tradition of painting the signs of daily life with the materials, tools and technologies available today.

Works of art (selection)

By 2011 CitéCréation had created around 500 works of art worldwide.

Starting point France

The group originated in 1978 in Oullins , a suburb of Lyon. She became internationally known through the Murals in Lyon ( walls in Lyon ) and Fresque des Lyonnais (frescoes from Lyon).

Appreciation of the Garnier settlement

Between 1920 and 1933, the Lyon architect Tony Garnier built the Tony Garnier estate named after him in the Les États-Unis district (8th  arrondissement ). Inspired by Émile Zola's novel Travail (work) from 1901, Garnier pursued the vision of a “Cité idéale”, an ideal city without fences and barriers with a functional separation of work, living and relaxation through a lot of greenery and trees. In the 1960s, the settlement developed into a problem district and threatened to deteriorate. Inspired by the popular frescoes by the muralists on a visit to Mexico, the Moroccan-born Halim Bensaïd wanted to transfer this style to his hometown Lyon. In the Quartiers difficiles, the neglected areas, he found the space he needed for his art.

“Bensaïd and his colleagues came up with the idea of renovating [the 49 buildings with social housing in the Garnier estate]. They decided to paint the walls of the buildings with large paintings and gathered local residents in a large hall: waiters, chauffeurs, taxi drivers, sellers, unemployed people, migrants. “What do you want?” They wondered about the artists. “The value of a concrete wall: you can paint it,” Bensaïd exclaimed. Anyone visiting the quarter today will stroll through an open-air museum with 25 colored wall paintings. A year after the end of the painting work, shops and boutiques opened there, and little by little a small economy has emerged. "Since then nobody has wanted to move here," says an elderly madame who has lived in the area for forty years that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site . "

Further work in France

The murals in Lyon now consist of over 100 works of art on walls and buildings with motifs from the history and life of the city. The facade artwork Fresque des Lyonnais from the years 1994/95 represents 24 historical and six contemporary people from Lyon on an area of 800 square meters. These include Irenaeus of Lyon , Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Tony Garnier as well as Abbé Pierre , Paul among his contemporaries Bocuse and Bertrand Tavernier .

In addition to Lyon and Oullins, the group also implemented projects in France in Angoulême , Biarritz , Brest , Carcassonne , Feyzin , Mulhouse , Paris , Valence , Vaulx-en-Velin and in Vienne . In the city of Angoulême, which has been awarded the state title Ville d'art et d'histoire (City of Art and History) and is considered the City of Comics , CitéCréation created a series of images with works by twelve cartoonists such as François Boucq and Jacques de Loustal , Frank Margerin or François Schuiten .

Works in Germany

Jupiterstraße, near Sonnenallee , Berlin, 2010

In cooperation with the district management of the Berlin social hotspot High-Deck-Siedlung , CitéCréation carried out the aviary (bird house) project in 2008/2009 , which, in addition to the art aspect, served as a qualification and employment measure for unemployed young people in the settlement. In preparatory workshops, around 40 residents of the district and the Lyon artist Halim Bensaïd collected ideas and motifs for the painting, from which the CitéCréation created a sample facade. Young people from the Neukölln district then worked with the artists to paint the façades of an elongated block of flats almost over the entire area (around 5,000 m²) with more than 150 species of birds as well as plants and trees. In 2010 a joint initiative, in which the Schader Foundation is involved, awarded the Aviary project recognition in the “Socially Integrative City” competition. In addition to the successful, creative facade design, the foundation emphasized in the laudation that the project had built bridges between young and old as well as between cultures and thus promoted the development of a social city . On November 1, 2010, four more facade works of art were inaugurated west of the high-deck housing estate. Three plants in Sonnenallee 307–309 / corner of Jupiterstraße and one plant in Jupiterstraße 15. The colorful, sometimes fantastic motifs stand for cosmopolitan urbanity and peaceful coexistence.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the twinning between Frankfurt am Main and Lyon, CitéCréation created a large-scale work of art in the Konstablerwache underground station in 2010 together with the Potsdam subsidiary CreativeStadt . Several illusionistic works of art were created on 500 square meters of the station wall under the theme “Travel in space and time” . They show different motifs from both cities, which are connected with a fictitious means of transport. The work was unveiled on June 11, 2010 in the presence of Lyon's Lord Mayor Gérard Collomb and City Councilor Volker Stein .

Other well-known projects of CitéCréation / CreativeStadt in Germany include the Europaviertel in Berlin-Hellersdorf , of which the first construction phase “German facade” was implemented as of 2010 as a model of the sustainable development of urban space in large estates, and the mural “Transition - Paths of the transition ”in Teltow, Brandenburg . There are also facade art works in the climatic health resort of Waren (Müritz) (pedestrian zone 2010), in Frankfurt (Oder) (facade with panels from life and a large portrait of Alexander von Humboldt , 2010) and in Leipzig .

Further plants worldwide

Mural in Jerusalem on Jaffa Street to the tram

In the rest of Europe, the group was active in Barcelona , Lisbon , Naples and Trikala as well as worldwide in Jerusalem , Mexico City , Moscow , Québec , Shanghai , Tiberias and Yokohama (in the Toyota shopping center "Tressa Yokohama").

The world's largest trompe l'oeil painting, measuring 5,000 square meters, was created in Shanghai . The monumental painting on the façade of the Carrefour Wuning Store in the center of the city shows motifs from the Alps, the Mediterranean coast, the Rhône-Alpes region and the cities of Lyon and Paris under the motto “A stroll through France” . In Israel CitéCréation refrained from depicting religious motifs. The murals in Jerusalem are dedicated to historical themes such as Byzantine market scenes or scenes from everyday life such as the tram , school or theater. Murals on its 2000 year history adorn the largest city of Galilee , Tiberias. In Canada , the mural artists have implemented several projects in the province of Québec with their subsidiary MuralCréation . In 2002, a major project began in Mont-Joli on the Gaspésie Peninsula in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence , in which a gallery of 35 murals in the open air was created over several years. The gallery aims to build a bridge from the past to the future of the city. In Russia , a Moscow housing company commissioned the facade artists to create a series of monumental trompe l'oeil paintings. The first mural that was realized shows motifs and scenes from the 19th century from the renowned Norman seaside resort of Deauville as a symbol of elegance and a special way of life.

Remarks

  1. The “recognition” awarded is not identical to the prize itself. As part of the “Socially Integrative City Prize” competition, ten projects in three different categories are recognized as “prize winners”. Eleven other projects receive “recognition”.
