The Communauté de communes Castelnaudary Lauragais Audois is a French association of municipalities with the legal form of a Communauté de communes in the Aude department in the Occitania region . It was founded on December 21, 2012 and consists of 43 parishes. The administrative headquarters are in the city of Castelnaudary .

The community association was created in 2013 by merging the predecessor organizations

geography

The community association is located in the old cultural landscape of the Lauragais . Its geographical and economic center is the city of Castelnaudary, where the Canal du Midi , completed in 1681, runs through, which in turn is supplied with water by several smaller rivers (e.g. the Hers ), various smaller canals ( rigoles ) and a catch basin. The A61 motorway essentially follows the course of the canal. The predominantly located at altitudes of 200 to 350 meters above sea level. d. The landscape located above the sea is characterized by rolling hills with isolated forest areas, but mostly fields; the lowest point is around 140 meters above sea level. d. M. The 218 meter high Lac de la Ganguise is a reservoir completed in 1979, which is primarily used for agricultural irrigation purposes and can therefore also be used as a swimming and recreational lake. With the exception of the town of Castelnaudary, all the municipalities in the Lauragais are predominantly characterized by agriculture - mainly wheat , corn and sunflowers are grown . Livestock farming and viticulture hardly exist in the region.

history

Most places were settled in the Middle Ages - Albigensian Crusades (1209–1229), Hundred Years War (1337–1453) and Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) have left their mark in some places. The old cultural landscape of the Lauragais experienced its heyday in the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period through the cultivation of woad ( pastel ). With the import of indigo beginning in the 17th century, the region began to decline; the farmers returned to traditional agriculture.

Attractions

The already mentioned in the 9th century Benedictine - Saint-Papoul Cathedral was once the cultural center of the region. In some places there are still simple, completely or partially preserved, Romanesque or Gothic churches. After the devastation caused by wars and marauding soldiers, some churches were completely or partially renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries. The hallmarks of several churches in the region are the imposing bell gables in the Tolosan tradition. The castles that were formerly also here have mostly been demolished. In some places the tower stumps of windmills can still be found - that of Mireval has been restored.
