The Dollberg rises in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park , directly on the northern border of the Saarland with Rhineland-Palatinate, in the southwest of the Dollberge. Its summit is 1.4 km south of Neuhütten (Rhineland-Palatinate), which is a district of the mountain, 3.5 km north-northeast of Otzenhausen , 3.8 km northwest of Eisen and 4.5 km northeast of Nonnweiler (Saarland) in the District of Sötern , which is part of the municipality of Nohfelden 5.3 km (as the crow flies ) southwest of Dollberg.

The Dollberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Hunsrück (No. 24), in the main unit Hoch- and Idarwald (242) and in the subunit Black Forest high forest (242.0) to the natural area Dollberge and Herrsteiner Forest (242.02). The landscape falls to the north to west into the subunit Züscher Hochmulde (242.1) and to the south to southeast into the subunit Prims-Traun-Senke (194.7), which belongs to the main unit Prims-Nahe-Bergland ( Oberes Nahabergland ; 194 ).

Waters

The Känelbach and the Waldbach (Krippbach), the left and right source streams of the Söterbach , arise on the southeast slope of the Dollberg , to the south the source of the Prims tributary of the Münzbach . The Primstalsperre (Nonnweiler dam) stretches along the Prims to the west of the wooded mountain .

Protected areas

The Dollberg nature reserve is located on the Saarland part of the Dollberg ( CDDA no. 81535; designated in 1957; 29.87  hectares in size). There are also parts of the 1976 designated landscape protection areas (LSG) Hochwald-Idarwald with peripheral areas (CDDA no. 321654; 46.94903  km² ) in the northeast, LSG in the district of St. Wendel - in the municipality of Nohfelden (CDDA no. 390224 ; 27.1075 km²) in the southeast and LSG in the district of St. Wendel - in the municipality of Nonnweiler (CDDA no. 390221; 12.492 km²) in the southwest. Highest mountain in the Saarland

In the 20th century, Dollberg and Schimmelkopf (Weiskircher Höhe) were considered to be the highest elevations in the Saarland, with a value of 695  m in full meters . According to precise measurements of the State Office for cadastre, surveying and maps beings from 2005, the Dollenberg with is 695.4  m by 0.6 m higher than the mold head. The summit of the Dollberg is covered with mixed forest and offers no views apart from a sign that identifies it as the “highest point in the Saarland”. However, neither the Dollberg's name nor its claimed height of 695.4  m can be found on official maps .

Ring wall of Otzenhausen

In the area of ​​the south-west foothills of the Dollberg, between the mountain and Nonnweiler, there is the 2.5 km long ring wall of Otzenhausen , which surrounded a Celtic fortress ( oppidum ).

Traffic and walking

Westwards past the Dollberg and along the Primstalsperre , the intersecting state roads  166 and 147 run as a connecting road between Neuhütten and Otzenhausen . For example, starting on this road, the mountain can be hiked on mostly forest trails and paths. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig leads across and along the western foot of the mountain and the reservoir the European long-distance hiking trail E3 .
