Dabbala Rajagopal "Raj" Reddy (born June 13, 1937 in Katur , Andhra Pradesh , India ) is an Indian-American computer scientist who has made significant achievements in the field of robotics and received the Turing Award in 1994 together with Edward Feigenbaum for their work in Area of artificial intelligence .

Life

Reddy received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Guindy Engineering College at the University of Madras in Chennai (now part of Anna University ) in 1958 and a master's degree from the University of New South Wales in 1960 . He then worked as an IBM representative in Australia until 1963 , and finally did his doctorate in computer science at Stanford University in 1966 with the later Turing Prize winner John McCarthy .

Reddy initially stayed as an assistant professor of computer science at Stanford University until he moved to Carnegie Mellon University as an associate professor in 1969 and became a full professor in 1973.

Services

At his instigation, America's first robotics institute was founded at the CMU in 1979, which he also headed until he became dean of the CMU School of Computer Science in 1991 , which he remained until 1999. He was also the first director of Carnegie Mellon West , the CMU campus in Silicon Valley , and also helped establish the campus in Qatar .

Reddy served as vice-chairman of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee under Bill Clinton and George W. Bush from 1999 to 2001 , where he achieved a significant increase in federal funding for research in technology. From 1987 to 1989 he was President of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence . He also sits on the Microsoft Technical Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of 3Com , is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Carnegie Group and a member of the international board of directors of the Israeli Peres Center for Peace .

Reddy’s research projects are in the areas of robotics, AI, human-computer interaction and speech recognition (e.g. the Hearsay program for recognizing spoken language using the Blackboard method), and currently they are mainly focusing on these Improving the living conditions of the poor through digital technologies, for example the Million Book Digital Library Project (which aims to make digitized books available online for free), the Fiber To The Village Project and the PCtvt (a combination of computers, Television and telephone).

He also worked on the 21st Century Gurukulam pilot project for the rural population of Andhra Pradesh. Reddy initiated the establishment of the Jawahar Knowledge Center at the Sri Venkateshwara University College of Engineering , where he pays 50 students 1,000 rupees per month as part of the Earn while you learn program .

Reddy was the PhD advisor to Kai-Fu Lee , the president of Google China.
