Denis Alexandrowitsch Kornilow ( Russian Дени́с Алекса́ндрович Корни́лов ; English transcription Denis Kornilov ; born August 17, 1986 in Gorki , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian ski jumper . He became student world champion at the Winter Universiade 2007 in Pragelato, Italy .

Career

Denis Kornilow made his international debut in the 2002/03 season in the Continental Cup show jumping. In his first two starts this season he missed the points as 46th in Liberec and 44th in Engelberg . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2003 in Sollefteå , Sweden , he finished 58th in the individual.

Kornilov drew attention to himself in November 2003 when he was training for the World Cup jumping in Ruka, Finland, where he reeled off his jumps over enormous distances. At that time nobody knew the 17-year-old and he caused general astonishment. Since he had not scored any Continental Cup points up to this point, he was not allowed to start the World Cup and therefore had to watch the competition from the grandstand. On December 14, 2004, he picked up his first COC points in sixth place in Lillehammer . A week later, on December 20th, he made his debut in the World Cup in Engelberg. As 18th he got his first World Cup points straight away. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in February 2004 in Stryn , Norway , he finished 31st in the individual and tenth place with the Russian team. In the same month he was in his first World Cup season at the Ski Flying World Championship in Planica . He was 27th in the individual and seventh in the team competition. In the summer of 2004 he made his debut in the Summer Grand Prix . In two races in a team and a single start, he still missed the points. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2005 , he finished 39th on the normal hill and 26th on the large hill in the individual competitions. With the Russian team, he was fifth on the normal and sixth on the large hill. On August 31, 2005 he took his first Grand Prix points in Predazzo as 20th . At the ski flying world championship in 2006 on the Kulm , he finished 39th in the individual and seventh in the team. At his first Olympic Winter Games in Turin in 2006 , he did not reach the finals in an individual with 34th place on the normal hill and 33rd on the large hill. With the Russian team he reached the final round and finished eighth.

Kornilov arrived in the extended world elite in the 2006/07 season . With increasing consistency he achieved placements in the top 20 in the World Cup. His best placement in the World Cup to date was achieved on March 13, 2007 in Kuopio in fifth place. In the overall World Cup he achieved his best result to date with 19th place. His greatest success of the season was at the Winter Universiade 2007 when he won gold on the large hill and bronze on the normal hill. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo , he finished 23rd on the normal hill and 47th on the large hill in the individual competitions. With the Russian team he was sixth on the large hill. On January 6, 2008 in Bischofshofen and on February 3, 2008 in Sapporo, he was able to set his best individual placement in the World Cup with two further fifth places. At the Ski Flying World Championships in 2008 in Oberstdorf , he finished 26th in the individual and fifth in the team.

At the Russian Championships in 2009, he jumped in the individual behind Ilya Roslyakov to second place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , he took 20th place on the normal hill and 22nd on the large hill in the individual competitions. With the Russian team he was ninth on the large hill. On March 21, 2009 he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup as third in the team competition in Planica .

In the summer of 2009, Kornilov jumped very successfully in the Summer Grand Prix . On August 9th, he reached his first Grand Prix podium in third in Hinterzarten . He jumped consistently into the top ten throughout the summer and finished fourth in the overall standings with 293 points. With that he achieved his best placement to date. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he reached 26th place in jumping on the normal hill and 35th place on the large hill. With the Russian team he finished tenth. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 , he finished 16th in the individual competitions on the normal hill and 32nd on the large hill. With the Russian team he was ninth on both the normal and the large hill.

At the Russian Championships 2011, which were held on October 13th and 14th in Almaty , Kazakhstan , he won the silver medal on the large hill behind Anton Kalinitschenko , while it was only fifth on the normal hill. At the Ski Flying World Championships 2012 in Vikersund , he finished 22nd in the individual and ninth in the team. At the end of March 2012, Kornilov had to undergo meniscus surgery after experiencing severe pain while training at the Russian championships. The operation was carried out in Germany.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme in 2013 , he was disqualified in the qualification on the normal hill and took 32nd place in the individual competition on the large hill. With the Russian team he was both ninth in the mixed team competition, which was held for the first time, and in the team competition on the large hill. At his third Olympic Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi in his home country, he was eliminated in the individual competitions as 48th on the normal hill and 31st on the large hill in the first round. With the Russian team, he also missed the finals by finishing ninth. At the Ski Flying World Championships 2014 in Harrachov he finished 35th in the individual. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he was only used in the competitions on the large hill. He was 27th in the singles and seventh with the Russian team. At the 2016 Ski Flying World Championships at Kulm , he finished 29th in the individual and eighth in the team.

In February 2017, he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships for the seventh time in Lahti . He finished 29th in both individual competitions. In the mixed team competition he was sixth and with the Russian team he was ninth on the large hill.

At the 2017 Summer Grand Prix , Kornilov achieved his second and third individual podium finishes in the Grand Prix as third in Courchevel and Tchaikovsky , after having achieved his first in 2009. At the start of the 2017/18 season , he had a serious fall in the team competition in Wisła on landing, but did not suffer any serious injuries. At the Ski Flying World Championship 2018 in Oberstdorf , he finished 19th in the individual and seventh in the team. At his fourth Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018 , he started as an Olympic athlete from Russia and competed in all three competitions. In the individual competition on the normal hill , he finished 24th and in the individual competition on the large hill, he finished 29th. With the Russian team he was seventh in the team competition on the large hill .

At the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tirol , he finished ninth in the team competition with the Russian men's team, after failing in the individual competition on the large hill in the qualification.
