German road cycling championships 2016
The German road cycling championships 2016 for women and men took place from June 24th to 26th in Streufdorf and in Erfurt in Thuringia and on September 4th in Genthin .
The championships
The individual time trials of the men under 23 and elite as well as the women were held on June 24th in Streufdorf, about 110 kilometers south of Erfurt. The start and finish were in Oberen Markstraße, from there the two men's classes headed north to Bedheim , back south towards Gleichamberg , Linden , Haubinda to Rieth and via Westhausen north back to Streufdorf. In the women's individual time trial, the route around the loop south of Westhausen via Rieth was shortened.
The street races of the elite men and women took place on June 26th in Erfurt and started at the House of Social Services on Juri-Gagarin-Ring. A lap of 15.4 kilometers was driven, which led from the start through Johannesvorstadt to the northeast towards Roter Berg , then on the long straight bypass road south to Linderbach , and from there via Weimar Strasse through the Krämpfervorstadt to the west again Downtown led back to the Juri-Gagarin-Ring to the start and finish. The men drove route 14, the women seven times.
The U23 road race championship was held on June 16, 2016 as part of the Velothon in Berlin . Unna in North Rhine-Westphalia also originally applied for the event .
The elite team time trial was held on September 4, 2016 in Genthin.
They run
Around two weeks before the races in Erfurt and the surrounding area, the German U23 road racing championship was held as part of the Berlin Velothon. For a long time, the race was dominated by an eight-man breakaway group around Lennard Kämna and Leon Rohde , who drove three minutes ahead of the field. At 150 km the group was "swallowed" by the peloton. 600 meters from the finish there was a mass crash in which around 40 riders were involved, including time trial junior world champion Leo Appelt , who then had to be hospitalized.
The individual time trials of the men under 23, women and men elite took place on Friday, June 24th, in humid and hot weather and daily maximum temperatures of 35 degrees. The route was seen as “challenging” and was selected by Jörg Werner , manager of Tony Martin and head of the co-organizing Team Spirit , because its requirements were similar to those of the Olympic Games . Favorite Martin won the individual time trial by around one and a half minutes over runner-up Jasha Sütterlin and thus won the title for the sixth time. Despite the heat, the athletes in the U23 race, who drove the same route, achieved times that would have secured them top places in the elite time trial. Berlin's Maximilian Schachmann won here , ahead of Jan Tschernoster and Marco Mathis .
In the women's event , Trixi Worrack won the time trial, which the media referred to as the “Worrack miracle”: only three months earlier, on March 20th, the athlete fell at the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and injured herself so badly that she a kidney had to be removed in an emergency operation.
At the road races on the following Sunday the external conditions were more ideal, the humid heat had cooled off. The women's race was won by Mieke Kröger from Bielefeld , who won the title of German road champion for the first time. The 107-kilometer race was initially shaped by a top duo of Gudrun Stock and Stefanie Paul , who, however, could not maintain their leadership; Stock later had to give up the race. Around 20 kilometers from the finish, a group of eleven female riders moved forward. Kröger and Romy Kasper attacked from this top group and were at times up to 30 seconds ahead. Around three kilometers from the finish, Kröger attacked alone and crossed the finish line with a lead of ten seconds over her teammate Lisa Brennauer . The 19-year-old Jenny Hofmann from Leipzig came in surprisingly third .
In the men's category, André Greipel “got back” the title that he had left to the young Emanuel Buchmann the year before . The race was contested at high speed, Greipel drove at an hourly average of 47.4 kilometers per hour . In the course of the race there were several breakaway attempts, none of which could withstand the high speed of the race. Greipel won after a long sprint away from the front. Second was the new Max Walscheid , who was seriously injured in a serious training accident in Spain in January of that year, ahead of the Erfurt local hero Marcel Kittel . The course was actually tailored to Kittel, but in the sprint it was in an unfavorable place, so that only place three remained.
