Dirt Rally is a racing game that was originally developed by Codemasters for the Microsoft Windows operating system  and has been distributed since 2015. The computer game is the tenth episode of the Colin McRae rally racing game series introduced in 1998 .

publication

A paid early access version was put online on the Internet sales platform Steam on April 27, 2015 ; the retail version for Windows was published on December 7, 2015. The versions for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game consoles and the DVD version for Windows went on sale on April 5, 2016. The port for the Linux operating system was developed by Feral Interactive and published on March 2, 2017, followed by a port for macOS High Sierra on November 16, 2017 .

On February 17, 2017, support for head-mounted displays appeared via downloadable content (DLC). In addition to a completely new feeling, the additional content brings a new game mode into play in which you take on the role of the co-pilot while someone else controls the vehicle.

The English sales name Dirt Rally [ dɜ: rt ræli ] is stylized by the manufacturer as DiRT Rally and means “dirt rally”.

Game mechanics

Dirt Rally is a racing game that simulates rallying . Players compete against each other in time trials on changing road surfaces and weather conditions. The particular challenge of rallying lies in the sometimes low traction on changing road surfaces, which in addition to asphalt also consist of gravel, gravel, sand, mud, snow and ice, which means that bends often have to be negotiated in a drift . Bumps and steep gradients also reduce road grip .

Level design

The levels are designed like a tube, that is, the drivable area within the depicted landscape encompasses little more on the side than the race track and is delimited by walls, trees and slopes. If the distance from the route is too far, the vehicle is set back on the route. The route lengths vary from 4 km in Monaco to 15 km in snowy Sweden. Each route is divided into several stages, each stage is a four to ten minute long point-to-point time trial. The fastest overall time wins.

At the start of sales, the game simulated 36 tracks in the three locations Monte-Carlo (Monaco), Powys (Wales) and Argolis (Greece) - and offered an asynchronous multiplayer mode. Updates added three more tracks in Baumholder (Germany), Jämsä (Sweden) and Värmland (Finland) as well as the two racing modes rallycross and player-versus-player multiplayer . In July 2015, Codemasters announced a collaboration with the FIA World Rallycross Championship, resulting in the three additional (circular) race tracks Lydden Hill Race Circuit (England), Lånkebanen (Norway) and Höljesbanan (Sweden). In addition, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb can be recreated with some of the record vehicles there.

Vehicles and driving physics

The 46 simulated rally vehicles are based on real models from the period 1963 to 2017 from 13 European and three Asian manufacturers. The authentic racing cars are categorized by decades or in racing classes: 1960s, 70s and 80s, Group B , Group A , Group R and World Rally Cars (WRC) from the 2000s and 2010s. The vehicles can be customized with up to ten different paint finishes.

The degree of simulation of the game is comparatively high. The handling model takes into account the nature of the surface, the inclination and slope of the roadway and the weather conditions. Optional driving aids are anti-lock braking systems (ABS), traction control (ASR) and vehicle dynamics control (ESP), which can be regulated in five stages and are also available for vehicles that did not have this technology. The rear of the vehicle can be made to slide out using the handbrake .

The physics engine contains a damage model that reacts to collisions , deforms the body and, with increasing destruction, has a negative impact on the functionality of the units, steering , brakes, wheel suspension and driving behavior. Dust and mud settle on the textures of the body and windows.

User interface

The PS4 and Xbox One game consoles deliver a maximum resolution of 1080p (1920 × 1080 pixels) and anti-aliasing . The macOS operating system can display up to UHD + (5120 × 2880 px). Alternatively, a virtual reality headset such as the Oculus Rift can be used. You can choose between a cockpit view, a hood and front bumper camera and two chasing perspectives behind the vehicle.

The simulated rally vehicles can be controlled via keyboard, gamepad or steering wheel. With the latter, the steering forces can be simulated using force feedback .

development

The online multiplayer modes also include rallycross races against six opponents.

Codemasters developed  Dirt Rally  on the basis of the company's own ego engine in version 2.1. Development began in 2012 with a small development team after the release of the video game  Dirt: Showdown . The team emphasized the claim to develop dirt rally as a racing simulation . They started by developing a prototype of a handling model and routes based on map data. Compared to the previous titles, a completely new physics model was programmed.

In late 2013, an early development version was presented to journalists by Dirt Rally , but it wasn't until April 27, 2015 that the game was officially announced. On the same day, an  early access  version for the Windows operating system was  put online on Steam . Game developer Paul Coleman said that in order to develop a game, it is important to release an early software build to take into account feedback from players. At an early stage, he emphasized the intention to   later port Dirt Rally to consoles as well. Codemasters intended to add new vehicles, locations and modes in monthly content updates and to continuously optimize the game mechanics during the Early Access phase.

The full version for Windows was released on December 7th, 2015 and on April 5th, 2016 for the PlayStation 4  and Xbox One game consoles  . The port for macOS has been optimized for Apple's graphics API Metal 2 and requires at least macOS High Sierra (version 10.13).

The German computer game magazine  GameStar gave the sports game a rating of 90% on the grounds: “Dirt Rally is currently the best rally simulation and one of the best racing games of all time. But beginners have a hard time. ”The British video game  magazine GamesTM praised the conceptual development towards simulation with the words" this is the best thing the Dirt name has ever been associated with and rallying enthusiasts are sure to be relieved that the obsession with the kind of American slang that was only partially hip in the 90s has been overcome and removed. " (“This is the best ever associated with the name  Dirt  , and rally enthusiasts will be sure to be relieved that obsession with the kind of American slang that was only temporarily hip in the 1990s is overcome and eliminated has been"). The British  Play magazine  wrote: "It doesn't patronize with gimmicky mechanics, nor is it a dry, joyless simulation" ("It neither patronizes with gadgets, nor is it a dry, joyless simulation"). GameSpot praised the physics model, graphics, and extensive range of vehicles, but said the Hill Climb and Rallycross modes both felt immature. The British newspaper  Metro  criticized that the game was generally lacking in content. The Italian version of the online magazine Eurogamer also  noted: "All we can hope for is new content - more cars and tracks."

The English language website  GamesRadar  addressed the unforgivable nature of the game and wrote: “Tire bursts, radiators overheat and you often hobble across the finish line with a poor time simply because you lost control of your vehicle in an otherwise flawless and competitive race . “ GamesMaster , Edge  and IGN  agreed. The website VideoGamer.com  praised the "incredible speed" of the game, PlayStation Universe  explained that it was better than the Rally simulation  Richard Burns Rally from 2004. The Official PlayStation Magazine wrote that it was "the most intoxicating racing game that Codemasters last in the Years, and undoubtedly the best rally game on the PS4 ", and the Official Xbox Magazine (OXM)  added:" Without question the best rally simulation of all time. "In contrast, the British computer game magazine PC Gamer criticized :" Unfortunately, it falls into physics and handling something flat. The lack of any kind of dangerous feeling when flying over ice and mud is an absolute shame, and the amount of forced driving assistance is disappointing. Whoever is waiting for a new Richard Burns has to wait on. "

The British automotive magazine Evo  praised the audio design and said: “At times, Dirt Rally is excellent. The sound design in particular is excellent, as is the variety of vehicles on offer. The audio design in Dirt Rally really deserves a special mention. It's not just the best we've heard in a racing game, the route announcements from the passenger almost always match the section of the route perfectly. ”Regarding the graphics, they added:“ While it definitely doesn't come close to the quality of a Gran Turismo title, there is there are a lot of visual flourishes with which Dirt Rally impresses. "

The  Australian Official PlayStation Magazine said the game worked fine with a steering wheel. The car magazine Top Gear compared the game with its competitors and positively stated that “the handling of Sébastien Loeb Rally Evo is nowhere near as satisfactory and convincing as the scrambling  of Dirt Rally ”. British men's magazine  Stuff  said this is "a game where WRC 5 eats gravel".

The game reached # 1 in UK sales for the PS4 and # 19 on the European download charts. It peaked at number 2 in UK multi-format sales in the first week after its release, just behind third-person shooter  Quantum Break .

A month after publication listed the The Official PlayStation Magazine the game  Dirt Rally as the 16th best PS4 game ever. The Daily Telegraph  lists it as the top game of 2016. TechRadar has included the game in the list of "10 Best Racing Games on PC". The Octane magazine  leads it to number one of its list of the best simulation racing games. At the  BAFTAs  , the game was nominated for the award for the best sports game in 2016. The US video game magazine Game Informer awarded Dirt Rally the prize for the best racing game of the year. Gameplanet lists it as one of the best games of the year. Alphr  leads Dirt Rally  as the top 5 racing game for the PS4. PCGamesN ranks  the game among the top 3 most realistic PC racing games.
