Dundee United (officially: Dundee United Football Club ) - also known as The Tangerines or The Terrors - is a football club from the Scottish city of Dundee . The supporters are also referred to as The Arabs , which has recently been used more and more by the British media as an additional nickname for the club.

Eddie Thompson has been President and majority shareholder of Dundee United since September 2002, with the supporters of the association in the form of "ArabTRUST" representing the second largest shareholder.

United is the fourth most successful Scottish club in Europe, taking part in European club competitions 22 times and playing a total of 104 games. To this day, the mostly English media often confuse Dundee United with local rivals FC Dundee . The duels between the two clubs are called Dundee Derby .

Club history

Inspired by the clubs Hibernian Edinburgh and Celtic Glasgow , the Irish Catholic community in Dundee founded the new club in 1909 after the decline of the club “Dundee Harp” under the initial name “Dundee Hibernian” and took over the “Cleptington” venue from the “Dundee Wanderers” Park "(then renamed" Tannadice Park "), where they played the first game on August 18, 1909 against Hibernian Edinburgh, which ended in a 1-1 draw. In October 1923, the club was saved from collapse by a group of business people from Dundee, while at the same time the new name "Dundee United" was chosen to give the club a greater appeal. Originally the name "Dundee City" was favored, but this led to protests at local rivals FC Dundee.

For many years, the club then played in the lower classes of the Scottish league system and was only represented for four seasons in the top division until 1959 Jerry Kerr was signed as the new coach. Kerr ended the 28-year absence from the Scottish elite league with the promotion of his new team, which he achieved in the first year of his reign with the runner-up in the Second Division . In the team of the era, some notable players like that were striker Dennis Gillespie and Jim Irvine and the defender Doug Smith and Ron Yeats , with Yeats later in the 1960s, the captain of Liverpool matured.

The following season United ended in the upper half of the table, placed before their city rivals FC Dundee and remained with only a few exceptions in the Scottish elite class for the next 35 years. In the 1960s, the team's playing strength was shaped by the Scandinavian players Örjan Persson , Finn Seemann , Lennart Wing , Finn Døssing and Mogens Berg . These players also achieved the first spectacular success in a European club competition, when Dundee United sensationally eliminated defending champions FC Barcelona from the trade fair cup in 1966 - the predecessor of the “ UEFA Cup ”.

In the summer breaks of 1967 and 1969, Lamar Hunt hired the United team to play in the North American professional league under the name Dallas Tornado .

Former FC Dundee coach Jim McLean took over from Jerry Kerr in 1971 and started the most successful era in the club's history. Until then, United had always been the significantly smaller and more unsuccessful of the two football clubs from Dundee. That changed when McLean (and at times assistant coach Walter Smith ) led Dundee United to the Scottish Cup final in 1974. In 1978 and 1979 followed with third place in the final table, the highest championship rank in the club's history, before the first title wins followed. The Scottish League Cup went to Dundee United for the first time in 1980 and 1981.

The best season for Dundee United was in the 1982/83 season, when the club won the Scottish championship for the first time with a point and scoring record. The club had also made a name for itself in European club football with victories over teams such as AS Monaco , Borussia Mönchengladbach , PSV Eindhoven , RSC Anderlecht and Werder Bremen .

When they first participated in the European Cup , Dundee United made it to the semi-finals, where they just lost to AS Roma . A 2-0 first leg win in the home stadium was followed by a 3-0 defeat, in the aftermath of which it was later announced that the Italian club had been punished for attempting to bribe a referee.

The high point of European merits was the 1986/87 season, in which United became the first Scottish club to reach the UEFA Cup final and, on the way there , had eliminated FC Barcelona - as it had already done twenty years before - with wins in two legs, which was up to to this day no other British team succeeded in a European club competition.

In the final United lost to Swedish club IFK Göteborg in the two-game game. Due to the very fair conduct of the "Arabs" during and after the game at Tannadice Park but the club received the first of the FIFA ausgelobten Fair Play award.

During these years Dundee United broke through with FC Aberdeen the traditional supremacy of the clubs Glasgow Rangers and Celtic Glasgow, known as the " Old Firm ", and founded the so-called " New Firm ". Since the Dundee FC was also often outside the major league, the duel from the New Firm increasingly replaced the traditional " Dundee Derby ".

The development of Dundee United under McLean from practical insignificance to one of the leading Scottish football clubs lasted for almost 22 years and ended with McLean's resignation in June 1993 and his continued existence as president of the club.

In coaching positions now followed with Ivan Golac the first non-British team manager of a Scottish football club, who inherited a healthy team structure from its predecessor. His first move, however, was to sell Duncan Ferguson to Glasgow Rangers for a transfer of four million British pounds - a record sum at the time for a transfer between two British clubs . Still, Golac was able to help his club win the Scottish Cup in its debut season after Dundee United had previously been defeated in six finals. With the 1-0 final victory in 1994 against Rangers - the decisive goal scored by Craig Brewster - United completed their domestic trophy collection.

Nevertheless, the fate of the club turned from then on in a negative direction. After a mostly average running season in 1994/95, a series of losses up to a 0-1 home defeat in the last game against the Celtics led to relegation to the second-rate First Division . The subsequent favorite position in the second division was not completely fair to the club in the next season and in the end only placed as runner-up. Nevertheless, United rose to the Premier League after the playoff encounter against Partick Thistle , which the club won with 3-2 goals after two games.

In recent times the club has not been able to celebrate any further successes worth mentioning and, like many provincial clubs in Scotland, had to fear more and more relegation. In 2005 the club managed to reach the final in the Scottish Cup, but where the club lost 1-0 to Celtic .

After it looked for a long time in the 2008/09 season as if one could qualify for a European competition again after a long period of abstinence, a defeat on the last day of the game - on the day of the club's 100th anniversary of all things - meant that they were defeated by FC due to the goal difference Aberdeen intercepted, and finished the season in fifth place.
