Eichig is a district of the Upper Franconian town of Lichtenfels in the Lichtenfels district .

The village is about twelve kilometers south-east of Lichtenfels on the heights of the Franconian Jura . Communal roads lead to Köttel and Rothmannsthal .

history

Eichig was first mentioned in a document in 1290, when Eberhard Förtsch von Thurnau gave the village of "Zemeichech" to Langheim Abbey. In 1307 Albert Förtsch von Thurnau gave the monastery two estates in "Eichech".

In 1801 belonged high centering the centering Office Weismain the Bishopric of Bamberg . The monastery of Langheim owned the village, community, bailiwick and feudal rule, and the tithe was owned by the Bamberg Katharinenspital. Seven houses with and two without a barn as well as a farmstead had to pay the tax to the monastery office in Langheim and many free properties to the Bamberg office in Weismain. There were also two domestic, Bayreuth fiefs.

In 1818 Eichig had 74 inhabitants and was united with Köttel to form a community. In 1862, the village was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office of Lichtenfels . In 1875 Eichig had 86 residents and 42 buildings. The Catholic Church was in Arnstein, 6.0 kilometers away, and the Catholic school in Rothmannsthal, 1.5 kilometers away. In 1900 the rural community Köttel covered an area of ​​748.34 hectares, 233 residents, all of whom were Catholic, and 45 residential buildings. 93 people lived in Eichig in 18 residential buildings. Hemp cultivation and sheep breeding were among other things a source of income for the population. In 1925 there were 117 people living in 17 residential buildings in the village. 1950 the place had 108 inhabitants and 16 residential buildings. He belonged to the parish of the Protestant parish in Azendorf . In 1970 Eichig had 84 residents and in 1987 96 residents and 24 residential buildings.

On January 1, 1978, Eichig was incorporated into the city of Lichtenfels.

The St. Wendelin chapel in Eichig was built in 1892 as a neo-Gothic sandstone block with a gable roof and gable turret . The furnishings include two wooden figures from the 17th / 18th centuries, which show Saint Sebastian and Saint Wendelin.

The well house consists of an iron and wood structure with a tent roof and a rectangular stone well trough. The 50 meter deep St. Josef Fountain was built in 1877.

The rock garden is located in a deciduous forest south of the village.
