Isling is a district of the city of Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia , into which it was incorporated on January 1, 1978. It has around 400 residents, who are mostly Catholic.

geography

Isling is centrally located in the Lichtenfels district between Altenkunstadt and Lichtenfels on the northern edge of the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park . Neighboring towns are Burkheim in the northeast , Tauschendorf in the east, Siedamsdorf in the southeast , Altendorf in the south, Mönchkröttendorf in the southwest and Roth in the northwest .

history

The village was probably founded at the beginning of the 9th century as one of the Slav parishes founded on the orders of Charlemagne.

Isling was first mentioned around 1136 with "Walther de Ysilingen". In 1138 the mention of "Walchel de Islingen" followed. In 1142, the Bamberg bishop Egilbert confirmed the tithe acquired by Count Poppo to the Langheim monastery with two manes and twelve fields near "Isilingen". In 1182 the Würzburg parish church was called "Iselingen".

In 1314 the parish was incorporated into the Langheim monastery . In 1818, after the secularization of the Langheim monastery (1802/03), the place became an independent community and in 1862 it was incorporated into the Lichtenfels district office .

In 1969 the place was awarded the gold medal in the national competition Our village should be more beautiful .

On January 1, 1978, the Isling community was incorporated into the city of Lichtenfels .

The name of Isling clearly shows the long history of this village. The ending ing means that Isling is one of the more than 1000-year-old Ing settlements. Isling originated from the personal name Islo (the first settler is said to have been a Count Islo - the field name Burg could refer to his former castle). Due to the name given, the apparently politically determined founding of Isling is attributable to settlers from Swabia . The term Swabia (von Sueben ) describes an ethnic group whose territory extended far beyond what is today the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia and the Württemberg region.

Buildings

Catholic parish church St. Johannes Baptista in Isling

In the list of monuments in Lichtenfels (Upper Franconia) , 19 monuments are identified for Isling .

Catholic Parish Church of St. John Baptista

The Catholic parish church is a central point of the place and a spiritual center for the surrounding villages. Founded in 1007 before the foundation of the Bamberg diocese , the parish was in Würzburg in 1182. The parish church choir and antechamber with tower date from around 1300; the sacristy is only a little younger. The church was burned down during the Thirty Years War, but was rebuilt in 1654. Extensive renovations followed in 1724: the nave and upper floor of the tower with dome were rebuilt, the choir vault was knocked out, the vault ribs in the vestibule were removed and the arch between the choir and vestibule and the choir arch were expanded. Several restoration works have been carried out in recent years.

Chapel of the Holy Cross Isling

Chapel of the Holy Cross

The chapel at the cemetery, about 500 m north of the village, not far from the new bypass road to Roth, was built in 1745 by Johann Thomas Nißler . It has a retracted choir to an axis with a three-sided end, the flat ceiling extends over a high hollow. The windows are arched except for a high oval window in the front wall of the choir. The coat of arms above the west portal belongs to the Langheim abbot Stephan Mösinger (1734–1751). The equipment consists of a high altar, two side altars and a pulpit.

Lady Chapel

The Marienkapelle, a field chapel near the corridor connecting path to Roth, is a rectangular plastered building with a hipped roof and simple brick roofing. The chapel is used by the parish for supplication services. The interior consists of a representation of Mary with the Christ child.

Dorflinden

A striking landmark is the old dance linden tree in the center of the market square. In 2015 it was chosen as the “Tree of Bavaria” and now represents all of Bavaria. Up until the 20th century, the two floors of the linden tree were used as a stage for musicians and a dance floor for various events. The annual Lindenfest is organized by the Musikverein. Since the necessary load-bearing capacity of the upper branch ring is no longer given, only the lower level can be used. The center of Isling with its dancing linden tree, picturesque fountain and onion dome church is picturesque.

On the forecourt of the former tithe house , a somewhat younger linden tree offers hikers the opportunity to rest and to protect themselves in bad weather.
