Emmanuel Amunike (* 25. December 1970 in Eze Obodo , Nigeria ) is a former Nigerian football - striker . He played a variety of international matches for the Nigerian national soccer team and was part of the team that took part in the 1994 World Cup and won the 1994 African Cup . He also contributed to winning the 1996 Olympic gold medal .

Career

Active playing career

Amuneke started his career in 1989 with the Anambra and Imo States Youth Soccer Association under the former Super Eagles national player Oscar Ezinwa , under whom he later also appeared at the youth academy Divine Royal International Football Academy. In his early career, Amuneke won league titles in Nigeria and Egypt. After the 1994 World Cup, he, who was still under contract with Zamalek Cairo at the time, signed a contract with MSV Duisburg and was presented to the public. At the start of training, Amuneke did not appear in Duisburg. Those in charge learned too late that he had already signed a contract with Sporting Lisbon . FIFA initially declared the first contract with the MSV to be legal. But since Amuneke insisted that he never wanted to play in Duisburg, FIFA made a U-turn. MSV Duisburg had to sell Amuneke to Sporting Lisbon for one million dollars. He became famous there after scoring a winning goal against arch rivals Benfica Lisbon . In 1996 he received the BBC African Footballer of the Year title . He was poached by the Spanish top club FC Barcelona for the equivalent of 3.6 million during the 1996/97 season, played the rest of the season before he was only a substitute due to injuries. Knee problems also kept him away from the 1998 World Cup . Amuneke never fully recovered and retired from his career after playing one final season in Jordan .

As a trainer

After the end of his active career Amuneke was assistant coach of Luiz Ribeiro Pinto Neto in 2008 at the Saudi Premier League club Al-Hazm from Ar Rass. After half a year he turned his back on the club and became an Africa scout for Manchester United . On December 23, 2008, after three months in England, he started his head coaching career at the Nigerian National League club Julius Berger FC . However, he only coached the club from Lagos for nine months and was already head coach of the Nigerian Premier League club Ocean Boys in November of the following year . At the beginning of 2013, Amuneke moved to the Nigerian Football Association and became assistant coach of the Nigerian U17 national football team . From August 2018 to July 2019 Amuneke was the coach of the Tanzanian national football team .

Others

On Spanish television he appeared in an advertisement that cracked jokes about his lack of success at FC Barcelona. He plays the role of an entrepreneur who sets up a company that sells videos about his soccer tech. The advertisement for this video says, "Watch his movements over and over," which is followed by repetitive clips in which he makes a throw-in. The advertisement now announced a free addition: a video "Dance with Amuneke" in which you can see him dancing in a disco without much skill.

His surname is often incorrectly given as Amunike .

Emmanuel Amunike Soccer Academy

In 2002 he founded the Emmanuel Amunike Soccer Academy in Ikorodu, Lagos State, where he is currently the club president. He is assisted by his two younger brothers Kingsley (* 1980) and Kevin (* 1986). The academy's best-known graduates include Yusuf Otubanjo from FC Red Bull Salzburg and Babatola Abiola from the Spanish Tercera División club CD Cayón , who play in Europe .
