Érik Gilbert Comas (* 28. September 1963 in Romans , Ain ) is a former French Formula 1 - racing driver .
Career
Monopostosport
Comas was 1990 Formula 3000 - European champion . In the following year he was signed by the Ligier Formula 1 team and competed in the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship for this team . The first year was unsuccessful for Comas, but the following year he was able to achieve his first championship point with a sixth place at the Grand Prix of Canada .
In qualifying for the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix , Comas had an accident in the fast Blanchimont corner . After Comas lost control of his Ligier, the car was thrown against the barrier on the right side of the lane, ricocheted off and finally stopped in the middle of the runway. Comas had passed out in the impact, but was otherwise uninjured. Ayrton Senna driving behind Comas passed the wreck, then stopped the car on the right side of the slope and hurried to his colleague's aid.
After the end of the season, in which Comas reached 11th place in the world championship with four points, he moved to French competitor Larrousse . However, the team was worse positioned than Ligier, and Comas could only achieve a single point in the 1993 season ( Grand Prix of Italy 1993 ). The 1994 season started more hopefully with another point in the second race of the season at the Pacific Grand Prix . In the rest of the season, however, there were a lot of cancellations for Comas and only one other point at the German Grand Prix - the last of this team. For the last race of the season Comas was finally replaced by the paydriver Jean-Denis Delétraz .
At the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix , Comas drove out of the pit lane after Ayrton Senna's fatal accident, despite the abandonment of the race and red flags. This happened because Comas was accidentally waved out of the pit lane by the marshals. After he was able to brake just in front of the accident Sennas vehicle, he withdrew from the race.
After Comas couldn't get hold of a new cockpit in Formula 1 in 1995, he turned to GT racing and from then on competed in the Japanese Super GT Championship, which turned out to be very successful. Comas became the top driver here, winning the title for the Nismo factory team in 1998 and 1999. Comas started in this series up to and including 2006 and contested 82 races during this time, of which he won six and finished 16 more on a podium. Teammates with whom he shared the stakes in the endurance races were among others. a. Masami Kageyama , Satoshi Motoyama and Aguri Suzuki . From 1995 onwards, Comas took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race several times .
In 2010 and 2011 Comas won the Monte-Carlo rally des Énergies Nouvelles et Électriques .
