history

Franklin County was formed on November 28, 1883 from parts of Whitman County . It was named after Benjamin Franklin , a publisher, statesman, writer, scientist, inventor, natural philosopher and freemason. He is also considered to be one of the founding fathers of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 49,347 people. There were 1,484 households and 11,604 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 61.91% White, 2.49% African American, 0.73% Native American, 1.62% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, and 28.98% other races Groups; 4.14% were from two or more races.
