Erwin Griswold
Erwin Nathaniel Griswold (born July 14, 1904 in East Cleveland , Ohio , † November 19, 1994 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American lawyer , professor and United States Solicitor General .
Life
The son of a lawyer studied after attending Shaw Public High School in East Cleveland between 1921 and 1925, first at Oberlin College , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (AB). He then completed postgraduate studies in law at the Law School of Harvard University in 1928 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and in 1929 with a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD). After qualifying as a lawyer in the state of Ohio, he was briefly a lawyer at Griswold, Green, Palmer & Hadden, the law firm of his father.
Shortly thereafter, however, he joined the United States Department of Justice , where he was special assistant to the Attorney General between 1929 and 1934 .
In 1934 he took a position as professor of law at the Law School of Harvard University and taught there until his appointment as dean of the law school in 1946. He held this position until 1967 and was also president of the association between 1957 and 1958 of the American Law Schools ( Association of American Law Schools ). He was also a member of the United States Commission on Civil Rights from 1961 to 1967 .
In October 1967 Erwin Griswold, who was a member of the Republican Party, was appointed Solicitor General by US President Lyndon B. Johnson and as such took third place within the US Department of Justice until June 1973.
After retiring from government service, he worked until his death in 1994 as an attorney with the law firm Jones Day, a major law firm with 2,200 lawyers and based in Washington . He was also active as a trustee of Oberlin College and the Historical Society of the Supreme Court of the United States .
Memberships
In 1941 Griswold was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Since 1955 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society and since 1972 a corresponding member of the British Academy .
