The Espe (also called Sichelbach in the upper reaches ) is an 8.55 km long, west-northwest and orographically left tributary of the Fulda in the north Hessian district of Kassel ( Germany ).

geography

course

The aspen rises a few kilometers north of Kassel . Its source lies within the municipality of Espenau in the local district of Schäferberg, which adjoins the Mönchehof district to the west . It is located a few meters east of Holländische Straße , which is a common part of federal highways 7 and 83 between Kassel and Espenau , at about 270  m above sea level. NHN .

Initially, the aspen, which runs through mostly agricultural areas - leaving the district of Schäferberg northeastwards - flows north of the Espenau district of Mönchehof, after which it takes up the stream from the bell pond. Immediately afterwards, the flowing water crosses under the Kassel – Warburg railway line to flow in a south-easterly direction, running between Mönchehof in the south-west and Hohenkirchen in the north-east, passing under Kreisstraße  34 between these Espenau districts .

The aspen then passes north of the Vellmarer Höhe ( 241  m to 252  m ), which rises north of the town of Vellmar , which is not flowed through by the stream , crosses  under the state road 3386 between Hohenkirchen and Vellmar and shortly afterwards flows into the Höllgraben landscape protection area in Fulda valley ( CDDA - No. 378485; identified in 1991; 81.5  hectares in size).

Then the aspen flows southeast through an ever narrowing and increasingly deeply incised valley, which is a few kilometers south-southwest of the Reinhardswald . Flowing into it from the north flows into the Weidberghof , where the Kassel-Steig crosses, the mostly dry Große Lohbach . Then, the stream takes on the north-western edge of the Fuldataler local part Simmershausen the farm group from the direction of aspen Auer Auf der Heide , from the valley hell coming and therein the at Fuldataler district Rothwesten located cottage Berg ( 300.7  m ) passing Höllgraben on; there the aspen leaves the landscape protection area. After that, in the northwest of Simmershausen, the Ellenbach , flowing from the west, flows into it, and at the southeast end of the village below the Ihringshausen hamlet of Schocketal, the Rohrbach, coming from the southwest from the direction of Ihringshausen-West .

After flowing through Simmershausen, to which the aspen occasionally inflicts high water , the aspen in the Schocketal , where the Fuldahöhenweg and Wildbahn hiking trails cross the brook, is only from federal highway 3 , which is part of the German Fairy Tale Route ( Sleeping Beauty Route ), and then by branching off from this road and after Wolfsanger leading national road  bridges 3235th From the bridge of the B 3 to the mouth of the Espe river, the stream flows through the Lower Fulda protected landscape area (CDDA no. 378710; 1973; 13.4783  km² ).

After the second road bridge and after that of the running parallel to the second bridge Fulda-cycle path opens the Espe at the eastern the Schocketals to approximately 131  m height in a narrow meander of the Western Weser -Quellflusses Fulda which there to the reservoir of at Wahnhausen located barrage Wahnhausen dammed is. To the east of its mouth, across the Fulda, lies the Kassel exclave Gut Kragenhof.

Natural allocation

The aspen rises and flows initially in the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34) and in the main unit West Hessische Senke (343) within the subunit Hofgeismarer Rötsenke (343.4), which it leaves in Espenau area around the L 3386. From then on it runs to the mouth of the Espe in the area of the Simmershausen district of Fulda through the northern part of the Kassel Basin subunit (343.3).

Watershed

The source area of the Espe is located on the Diemel-Eder / Fulda / Weser watershed : While the water of the Espe mainly flows south-east into the Fulda and then into the Weser , that of the Esse , which is just 3 km northeast of the Espe spring on the northern side, runs rises from the high altitude near Espenau-Hohenkirchen, northwards into the Diemel and finally into the Weser.

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the aspen is 24.313  km² . Their tributaries include, viewed downstream, with orographic allocation (l = left-hand side, r = right-hand side), water length and mouth with aspen brook kilometers :

  • Brook from the Glockenteich (l; 0.65 km), above the Kassel – Warburg railway line (near Espenau ; 7.1 km)
  • Großer Lohbach (l; 2.65 km), at the Weidberghof above Simmershausen (to Fuldatal ; km 3.15)
  • Höllgraben (l; 4.3 km), on the north-western outskirts of Simmershausen (to Fuldatal; km 2.1)
  • Ellenbach (r; 1.4 km), in the northwest of Simmershausen (km 1.75)
  • Rohrbach ( Rohbach ; r; 1.9 km), at the southeast end of Simmershausen near the Ihringshausen hamlet of Schocketal (km 0.4); runs along the creek - past the water Erlebnishaus Fuldatal  - the water trail Fuldatal
