The Sassnitz ferry port is a German seaport on the Baltic Sea in the Mukran district of the city of Sassnitz . It is located on the Prorer Wiek in the east of the island of Rügen . The port was opened in October 1986 as the Mukran Ferry Terminal for the Mukran – Klaipėda ferry route . The Sassnitz GmbH acts as operator of the port since May 2016 under the brand Mukran Port .

General

From Sassnitz there are ferry lines to Sweden , Denmark ( Bornholm ), Lithuania and Russia . With a cargo turnover of around five million tons per year, the Sassnitz ferry port is the third largest German Baltic Sea port.

The port is operated by Fährhafen Sassnitz GmbH based in Neu Mukran.

On the grounds of the Sassnitz ferry port, an industrial area of around 23 hectares was developed for relocation between 2013 and the beginning of 2015 for 9.8 million euros . For this purpose, EU funds were used to improve the regional economic structure in the amount of 5.5 million euros.

Since 2018, two more strings ( Nord Stream 2 ) have been laid for the expansion of the more than 1200 kilometers long two-string Nord Stream gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany . For this 2016 steel pipes were from as early as October Ruhr area with the railway delivered and stored in the port. Within two years, 612 trains with almost 150 steel pipes each were unloaded in Mukran. From summer 2017, these were coated with concrete by Wasco Coatings Europe . The works of the French pipeline builder Eupec , which had already been built for the completion of the pipes for the first two strands of the Nord Stream pipeline, were used for this purpose.

Railway ferry port

The ferry port Sassnitz is the largest German today railway ferry , and he is the only port in central Europe over railway tracks of the Russian broad gauge . There are three piers for handling the rail ferries. Two of them are two-story and designed in Russian broad gauge.

The importance of wagon loading has declined more and more in recent years. In the 2000s , between 60,000 and 70,000 wagons per year were still hauled here by rail ferries, with the majority coming or going from or to Sweden. In 2015 there were only 1500 wagons.

The 340 hectare area has a direct connection to the Stralsund – Sassnitz railway line . It is divided into a standard gauge section with 48 kilometers of track and a broad gauge section with 24 kilometers of track. Here there is the possibility of handling railway wagons with the broad gauge with 1520 millimeters gauge used in Finland , Russia and the Baltic countries . The broad gauge area offers several options for reloading the goods. In addition to five reloading halls, crane systems , a transfer system for liquid goods and a dangerous goods ramp, the gauging system from wide to standard gauge and vice versa is the central interface. Here the freight wagons are raised and the bogies are exchanged for those of the other track width. A wide-gauge variant of the DR series V 60 with SA-3- compatible center buffer couplings of the INTERMAT type is used for shunting tasks. The loading and unloading facilities are directly connected to the two double-decker broad-gauge ferry docks . The ferry docks each have five tracks in order to keep the loading and unloading times short.

For reasons of stability, the ships are loaded and unloaded simultaneously and with the same number of wagons on two tracks. When unloading, first the two middle tracks on the upper deck, then the two outer tracks and finally the middle track are removed, then this happens on the main deck in the same order. Loading takes place in reverse order.

The port of Mukran Port has a total of 19 berths for ships up to 365 meters in length and 9.5 meters in draft ; three more berths are under construction on the inside of the north pier in 2019. In addition to rail ferries , RoRo ferries , general cargo and bulk cargo ships as well as cruise ships can be handled. In the eastern part of the port there is a quay directly at a fish processing plant.

For heavy load handling, especially for the offshore industry, an area of ​​six hectares was raised in 2013/2014 for 24 million euros. The berth 3a located here was specially designed for the loading of heavy cargo and wind turbines for offshore wind farms , so that installation vessels can take cargo here . In 2016/2017, berth 10 in the eastern area was expanded for heavy goods loading (offshore industry). In August 2016, a bulk goods unloading point for grain handling was put into operation. More berths will be created on the inside of the eastern pier in 2018-2020.

Landside transport links

On the railway side, the Stralsund – Sassnitz line connects via the Ziegelgraben Bridge to Stralsund and thus connects via the Stralsund – Rostock line to Rostock and via the Berlin Northern Railway or the Angermünde – Stralsund line and the Berlin-Stettin line to Berlin .

On the road side, the port is connected to the B 96b ( E 22 ), with the B 96 (E 22 and E 251 ) via the Rügen Bridge with Stralsund and via a motor road with the A 20 .

The ferry port from Sassnitz train station can be reached by public transport buses on lines 18 (direct) or line 22 (also from the direction of Binz, approx. 20 minutes' walk from the “Dubnitz” stop) operated by the Vorpommern-Rügen (VRR) transport company.

As early as 1909, the Sassnitz city harbor was used as a railway ferry port for the royal line to Trelleborg (Sweden). From 1963 there were plans for a ferry connection between the GDR and the Soviet Union . The starting point of the ferries on the GDR side should be the Mövenort port on the north coast of the island of Rügen. These plans were rejected; new plans for the construction of a ferry connection began in 1977. From 1982 the ferry port in Mukran was built as one of the last major transport construction projects in the GDR for two billion GDR marks . In particular, it was supposed to create an efficient ferry connection for goods traffic with the Lithuanian Klaipėda (Memel), which at the time belonged to the Soviet Union , in order to avoid the lengthy land route, which was costly due to transit fees, and which was also due to the political at the time for the transport of goods from the GDR to the Soviet Union Situation in Poland had become unsafe. At the port expansion also numerous were construction soldiers of the NVA involved.

The ferry service on the connection from Mukran to Klaipėda began in October 1986 and was expanded to include a liner service with five railway ferries by 1989. Until the end of the GDR , the area was cordoned off from the surrounding area and not generally accessible. In the early 1990s to July 1994, a large part of the Soviet armed forces stationed in the GDR were transported home via Mukran. The bases for this were regulated in the context of the reunification of Germany in the residence and withdrawal contract. Multiple efforts to protect one of the last intact GDR-typical supply facilities for the soldiers and later also the civilian construction workers of the port - the “Mukran supplier” - failed. After 1990 the port in Mukran, which until then had been used exclusively for freight and military traffic with the Soviet Union, was given additional tasks. Because of the capacity limits in the Sassnitz city harbor, a new ferry terminal was built from 1995 and extensive renovation and expansion work was carried out on the existing jetties in order to accommodate the then increasing passenger traffic to Scandinavia . After two years of expansion, the largest German railway ferry port on the Baltic Sea was opened on January 7, 1998. From this day on, the royal line operated from the port of Mukran, which at that time was called the “Sassnitz Ferry Port”.

From 2001 the shipping company DFDS Seaways operated the railway ferry line to Klaipėda in Lithuania . However, due to the continually declining rail car traffic, this has become uneconomical in recent years and therefore stopped at the end of September 2013.

In early 2011, took Sassnitz GmbH total of 22 km broad gauge tracks of DB Netz and has Hafenbahn Baltic Port Rail Mukran as a subsidiary established. From June 2012 there was a regular ferry line between Sassnitz-Mukran and Ust-Luga (via Baltijsk ), on which Russian broad gauge railway wagons were also hauled. This line was expanded in July 2014 to include the destinations Klaipėda and Copenhagen .

From June 2014 rail vehicles were only sporadically hauled to and from Sweden, because Stena Line had relocated freight traffic to Rostock and passenger traffic (Berlin - Malmö night train) is only operated seasonally.

The extensive track systems in Mukran were used for years by the DB AG standstill management to park old and no longer needed passenger wagons, electric locomotives and diesel ICEs.

At the beginning of 2020, with the container ship SVS Vega as part of the New Silk Road, the ferry traffic between Russia ( Baltijsk ) and the Mukran Port under the name Baltic Sea Bridge was set up by Mukran Port Terminals GmbH and Co.KG, which also handles shortsea traffic for the the near Baltic Sea region. Further partners of the company are the Bahn Operator GmbH , the shipping company BREB , the railway company Potsdam (EGP) and the Russian-Kazakh-Belarusian railway company UTLC ERA (United Transport and Logistics Company - Eurasian Rail Alliance) based in Moscow.

At the beginning of August 2020, the Fährhafen Sassnitz GmbH was threatened by the Republican Senators Ted Cruz , Tom Cotton and Ron Johnson of the USA in the event that they continued to participate in the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, substantial economic and legal sanctions that would affect the port from the USA " perform commercially and financially ”.
