The Westfälische Hochschule Gelsenkirchen, Bocholt, Recklinghausen ( Westphalian University for short ) is a university of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia that was founded on August 1, 1992. It consists of the headquarters in Gelsenkirchen ⊙ and the locations in Bocholt ⊙ , Recklinghausen ⊙ and a study site in Ahaus ⊙ .
From August 1, 1992 to February 29, 2012, the Westphalian University was called the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences . The university consists of eight faculties and serves 25 Bachelor programs and 21 Master’s programs.
history
The Westphalian University has its origins in the State Engineering School for Mechanical Engineering in Gelsenkirchen-Buer, which started operations on October 1, 1962. With the establishment of the technical colleges in Germany in 1971, the engineering school was affiliated to the newly founded FH Bochum on August 1, 1971 . In October 1991 the Emscher-Lippe-Agentur (ELA) made the proposal to help the region, which was particularly hard hit by the decline in coal production, by founding a new technical college in solving structural problems. That is why the state government decided on January 15, 1992 to set up a new university of applied sciences with its headquarters in Gelsenkirchen. Thus the Gelsenkirchen department of the Bochum University of Applied Sciences became the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences. The then FH Gelsenkirchen was established by state law on August 1, 1992 as the 50th university in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The University of Applied Sciences has a technical, scientific and economic profile, supplemented by courses in law and journalism / public relations.
From May 2005 to November 2009 at this university was UNESCO - Chair "UNESCO Chair for Entrepreneurship and Intercultural Management" home. It was the first UNESCO chair for a university of applied sciences in Germany and the only one at all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia . With the chair an even more intensive knowledge transfer with foreign universities should be achieved.
A new building was erected in September 2007 because the house at Neidenburger Strasse 10 was contaminated with PCBs . The new building (today building B at Neidenburger Strasse 43) was handed over to the electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, supply and disposal departments and the Institute for Journalism and Public Relations at the start of the 2010/2011 winter semester.
On May 28, 2008, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia launched a competition for the establishment of three new universities of applied sciences, for which the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences applied with a concept. This resulted in the establishment of a further study location in Ahaus near the existing location in Bocholt. Study operations started in the 2009/2010 winter semester with two cooperative, training-integrated courses.
However, this competition also gave the university competition in the immediate vicinity, the Ruhr West University in the cities of Mülheim and Bottrop and the Rhine-Waal University in the cities of Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort .
Since September 18, 2012, there has been a cooperation agreement with the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , which enables WH students to obtain qualifications for teaching at vocational colleges while studying.
The Ruhr Master School was founded in December 2013 by the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences , the Bochum University of Applied Sciences and the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences . This should enable the establishment of a joint master’s course at the Ruhr universities of applied sciences, the creation of a master school with a diversified range of master’s courses and the simplified transition from the bachelor’s courses at the participating universities to the master’s courses at the Ruhr Master School.
In September 2015, in addition to teaching, research and studies, the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences included talent promotion as a task in its basic structure. In doing so, it implements advisory and support services in the run-up to the study or training decision, in the introductory phase and during the course of studies.
Subsidy scandal
In March 2007, allegations became public that three professors from the university had evaded millions in grants for an incubator center . Business start-ups should actually be promoted here. As a result, the lecturers (including the prorector responsible for planning and finance and two deans) and a former research assistant were arrested. On March 22nd, Innovation Minister Andreas Pinkwart put both Rector Peter Schulte , who had previously reported himself, and Chancellor Hans-Joachim Baier on leave . On an interim basis, ministerial director Heiner Kleffner , who had already led the University of Duisburg-Essen in the founding phase, was appointed head of the FH. The state audit office checked twice, the tax office carried out a group audit, and the Detmold audit office carried out a liquidity check. In the end it became clear: It was not the university administration that had embezzled money, but rather criminals in a spin-off company holding company of the university had misappropriated the money.
Bureau
After a change from a rector's constitution to a presidential constitution, Bernd Kriegesmann was unanimously elected as the first president of the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences on May 5, 2008. Since March 2000 he had a professorship in the field of business administration at the University of Applied Sciences Gelsenkirchen. In 2005 he was elected Dean of the Department of Supply and Waste Management. On August 1st, 2008 he was appointed president by the university council chairman Karl-Heinz Philippi and took over the management. On August 1, 2014, he went into his second term of office until 2020, which will be followed by a further term of office until 2026.
The vice-presidents of the still current executive committee are:
- Studies / teaching: Tatjana Oberdörster
- Research / development: Michael Brodmann
- Digitization: Ulrike Griefahn
- Sustainability / International: André Latour
- Economic / personnel administration: Chancellor Heiko Geruschkat
The term of office of the Vice Presidents runs until July 31, 2026, that of the Chancellor until 2027.
University Council
A university council was elected at the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences due to the Higher Education Freedom Act passed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The University of Applied Sciences Gelsenkirchen has decided in its adopted basic rules for a ten-person committee, half of which consists of internal members of the university. The other half consists of members who come to the body from outside the university. The current university council was confirmed by the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Science in January 2018, and its term of office is five years. The individual members are:
