Families is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The paper produced by the WDR was on May 6, 2018 First aired. In this 1057th crime scene episode, Cologne commissioners Ballauf and Schenk investigate their 73rd case.

action

Ivo Klein celebrated his bachelorette party with friends that evening. A short time later he is found dead on a street with a travel bag with 500,000 euros next to him. Investigators Ballauf and Schenk learn from eyewitnesses that the man was run over by a silver-colored small car. However, they were unable to recognize more than one Cologne license plate. First of all, the commissioners have the thankless task of conveying the sad news of the death of their groom to the victim's fiancée: Jessica Dahlmann cannot explain all of this.

The investigation leads Ballauf and Schenk to a kidnapping case. Ivo Klein accidentally found the bag with the money in the wastebasket and the money transfer obviously failed. So the victim was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fingerprints on the banknotes and the bag lead to the business lawyer Rainer Bertram. He admits that his granddaughter Charlotte Ritter was kidnapped a week ago and that his son-in-law was ordered by a ransom note to put the money in the trash. The mother had therefore turned to him, her father, to lend her the money.

In order to get a trace of the missing person, Ballauf and Schenk question their brother Paul and Charlotte's friend Kasper Fröhlich. They say that on the eve of the disappearance, they celebrated by mutual agreement that the high school graduate was admitted to an elite university in the USA. But it soon turns out that Charlotte Kasper was nowhere near as much in love with her as he did. Apparently she had recently gotten involved with an older man, which is why there were disagreements between Charlotte and her boyfriend. Ballauf and Schenk can identify the man who is Philipp Weigel: He is not the "new friend", but the biological father of Charlotte. After he accidentally met his daughter in a bar, he blackmailed Ina Ritter, who hadn't told her family about Weigel's fatherhood for all these years so as not to endanger her intact family. It is conceivable that Weigel also had something to do with her disappearance. But he has an alibi for the time.

On the other hand, the evidence against Charlotte's friend Kasper is increasing. According to the investigators' research, his father was killed in an accident at work three years ago. Since the employer had a good lawyer - Rainer Bertram - the family didn't see a single euro in severance pay. An act of revenge would therefore be conceivable. But Ballauf and Schenk are sure that Kasper honestly loves Charlotte.

Meanwhile, a severed finger from Charlotte is sent to the knights. The forensic doctor's analysis clearly shows that the girl's finger was cut off post mortem . The forced search for the victim finally brings success. The girl's body is found and it turns out that the cause of death is a broken neck and everything suggests an accident. In addition, Charlotte was already dead at the time the ransom was requested. Color particles lead the investigators to the scene of the accident, which is not far from the knight's apartment.

When there is a second ransom demand, Charlotte's father takes over the delivery of the money. Despite police surveillance, no perpetrator can be caught, but everything indicates that both Ludwig Ritter and Kaspar are behind the ransom demand. Kaspar is arrested and interrogated. He voluntarily admits that he wanted to use a friend's car to collect the ransom at the first handover. Out of frustration because of the failure, he accelerated and when Ivo Klein fell, he could no longer brake. He didn't want to run over the man. Ludwig Ritter can also be convicted, but he did not kill Charlotte. His son came to him that evening to tell him that his sister had fatally fallen. He hid Charlotte in the basement and that's when the idea of the "kidnapping" occurred to him. Since he doesn't have a good relationship with his father-in-law and was still frustrated about not being Charlotte's biological father, the whole thing wasn't particularly difficult for him.

Reviews

Christian Buß from Spiegel Online said: “There is a lot of contemporary decor to see in this 'crime scene' - but the dialogues are terribly old-fashioned. The confrontation within the family consists almost entirely of punches that even great actors like Schrott or Geisler-Bading cannot credibly play. The volume should then adjust it. Whenever it comes to the point, people howl or shout like in an eighties social drama. "

When Der Tagesspiegel evaluated Tilmann P. Gangloff : "Even minor supporting roles are not merely means to an end; therefore, the real quality of the film lies in the work with the actors and the attention to detail. The image design is also more than meticulous. [...] The fact that 'Families' turned out to be just a solid crime thriller and not an outstanding 'crime scene' is not least due to the many schematic interrogations with their customary dialogues ('We ask the questions'). "

When asked whether it would be worth switching on, focus.de said: “Yes and no. The thriller is certainly not a masterpiece and will not be discussed or recited in months. The script and dialogues are too sluggish and bumpy. Also, the entire film never win really in [sic] drive. Great arc of suspense? Nothing. And yet the crime thriller with the old 'Tatort' warriors Ballauf and Schenk is a good and fast-paced Sunday evening activity - without the high demands, which of course do not always have to be. "

The film service awarded one of five possible stars and gave a negative verdict: “Clumsily constructed (television) crime thriller, which, with papery dialogues and hair-raising logic errors, makes for a dozen cinematic goods devoid of tension. The expansion into a family drama also fails due to the complete lack of reality in the relationships presented. "
