Fish of Timor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fish List of Timor lists the fish species that live in the freshwater and brackish water near the coast of the Southeast Asian island of Timor . In the waters of the state of East Timor , according to Larson et al. 56 species known so far (as of 2007). Since different sources give different information about the known species, there are more species in the list. Other species were discovered in earlier studies, but not specifically assigned to the Indonesian West or East Timor (see literature ).

Endemic freshwater fish in the rivers of Timor are the only four centimeters long Oryzias timorensis from the family of rice fish (Adrianichthyidae) and Craterocephalus laisapi from the genus hard-headed . Quite a few species of East Timor are better known from the brackish water of the estuaries and mangroves , including the families of the cross catfish (Ariidae), the gobies (Gobiidae) and the archer fish (Toxotidae). The carp , the African catfish ( Clarias gariepinus ) and the Cyprinodontiformes Guppy , mosquitofish and Panchax ( Aplocheilus panchax ) were introduced by man.

The water system of the Ira Lalaros , the largest lake on the island, and the populations of aquatic inhabitants living in it are practically cut off from the outside world. The outflow of the lake, the Irasiquero, disappears in a ponor . Color tests have shown that the water reappears in three springs south of the Paitchau mountains and in four springs near Com on the north coast. A total of 21 different fish species live in the lake, two native and four imported fish species in Irasiquero.

Most of the rivers on the north coast of Timor are dry outside the rainy season . Only those whose headwaters are in the south, such as the northern Lacló , the Seiçal and the Lóis , flow all year round. The water of some springs in the north, such as those of Ira Ono , Lutu Ira and Came Ira , do not reach the sea because their water is used to irrigate fields or as drinking water.

In 2004 a specimen was found that was then described as a small representative of Stiphodon cf. atratus . In view of the adult animals found in 2006, it is possible to assign all of them to S. semoni . There are currently taxonomic studies that also suggest a new species that is related to S. atratus and resembles S. semoni .
