history

Freeport was originally part of the town of Harraseeket , now North Yarmouth , which was built around 1700. The place was finally named independently on February 14, 1789 and allegedly after the fictional London merchant Sir Andrew Freeport from Joseph Addison's Spectator . From here wood was shipped, mainly for building masts. The Harraseeket River was dammed here to use the water power for a grain mill , a sawmill and a fulling mill. The Shipbuilding gained through the Revolutionary War a boost, there were more than four shipyards. Fishing and agriculture were also important. In 1849 Freetown received its first rail connection. Here fabrics were made into clothing, there was a granite quarry and a shoe factory.

In 1903 Amos Gerald built an amusement park and a hotel here, the latter burned down in 1914. In 1912 Leon Leonwood Bean opened a shop here, LLBean , which later became a worldwide mail order company. In 1982, the McDonald’s restaurant chain wanted to demolish a building from the Greek Revival era , but due to a new regulation, the company had to build the restaurant inside the building without changing the external appearance.
