Friedrich von Flatow

Friedrich Gustav von Flatow (born November 29, 1820 in Meseritz ; † September 9, 1892 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general and director of the War Academy .

Life

origin

He was the son of the captain a. D. Friedrich August Wilhelm von Flatow (1786–1841) and his wife Anna Ernestine Henriette Friderike, née Möller (1792–1852).

Military career

Flatow attended the secondary school in his hometown from October 1, 1833, and joined the 18th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army in Posen as a musketeer on March 1, 1838 . There he was promoted to Second Lieutenant on September 25, 1838 . Flatow completed the General War School from October 1, 1844 to September 25, 1847, which he graduated with very good results. In April / May of the following year he and his regiment participated in the suppression of revolutionary unrest in the province of Posen . After a two-month assignment to the Sömmerda rifle factory, Flatow was transferred to the Berlin Cadet Institute on November 7, 1848 , where he worked as a teacher until June 29, 1859. In the meantime promoted to captain, he then returned to his regular regiment and was given command of the 10th company in Cottbus as chief . When he was promoted to major , Flatow was transferred to the General Staff of the IV Army Corps on July 5, 1862 . Under position à la suite of the General Staff of the Army, he was appointed director of the Potsdam War School on April 14, 1863 .

On the occasion of the war against Austria Flatow was assigned to the General Command of Saxony on June 10, 1866 and took part in the Battle of Königgrätz . After the peace treaty he returned to his post as director of the war school on September 12, 1866, was promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 20, 1866 and was awarded the Order of the Crown III. Excellent with swords. This was followed from January 12, 1867 to January 10, 1868 as director of the Kassel War School . Then Flatow was briefly battalion commander in the 6th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 55 , before he was commissioned on July 7, 1868 with the leadership of the 3rd Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 20 in Wittenberg . On July 14, 1868, he was appointed regimental commander and on July 23, 1868, with a patent from July 3, 1868, he was promoted to colonel .

In this position Flatow took part in the battles at Spichern , Vionville , Gravelotte and the siege of Metz during the war against France in 1870/71 . After the commander of the 11th Infantry Brigade , Louis von Rothmaler , was wounded , Flatow took command of this brigade during the Battle of Le Mans . For his energetic and prudent behavior, he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite on February 28, 1871 , after Flatow had already received both classes of the Iron Cross during the war . On July 3, 1872 he gave up the regiment, was transferred to the officers of the army and commanded to Württemberg . In Ulm , Flatow was given command of the 53rd Infantry Brigade and was promoted to major general on March 22, 1873 . After being released from this command, he returned to Prussia on December 15, 1877, when he was appointed director of the War Academy. The Württemberg King Karl I awarded Flatow the Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick in a subsequent recognition .

On June 11, 1879, he was promoted to lieutenant general . In addition, Flatow also acted as a referee during the major maneuvers between the Guard Corps and III. Army Corps and was a member of the Immendiatkommission several times. In recognition of his services as director Flatow received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword , on January 18, 1885 the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves and the Grand Cross of the Order of Albrecht . By giving him the character of General of the Infantry, Flatow was put up for disposal on September 7, 1886 with the statutory pension .

He spent his old age in Wiesbaden and later in Freiburg im Breisgau until his wife died . After his death he was buried on September 12, 1892 in the Invalidenfriedhof in Berlin.

family

Flatow had married Charlotte Albertine Woltersdorff, widowed Boeckh (1816-1887) in Berlin on February 3, 1848. She was the daughter of pastor Friedrich Woltersdorff. The following children were born from the marriage:
