The Association League Niederrhein 1977/78 was the 22nd season and last season of the Association League Niederrhein , which was the top division in the Lower Rhine amateur football of men from 1957 to 1978 . Until 1978, this league, together with the Mittelrhein and Westphalia association leagues , formed the substructure of the 2nd Bundesliga and was third-class in the German football league system of that time . In 1978 the Oberliga Nordrhein was introduced as the new third highest German division under the 2nd Bundesliga.

Season end

Olympia Bocholt was Niederrheinmeister and took part in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , but did not make it into the 2nd Bundesliga. The second in the table, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , took part in the 1978 German amateur championship as a representative of the Lower Rhine region and was eliminated in the first round.

The clubs in places 1 to 7 qualified for the newly created Oberliga Nordrhein , while the clubs in places 8 to 14 remained in the fourth-class association league. Newcomer VfB 03 Hilden and the amateurs from Schwarz-Weiß Essen had to relegate to the Lower Rhine regional league.
