After the preliminary round, all observers agreed. The best team in this part of the finals were (besides the Poles) the Dutch around the two Johanns, Cruyff and Neeskens. Against the defensive Swedes it was enough in the second game of Group III only to a 0-0, but Uruguay (2-0) and Bulgaria (4-1) were confidently defeated. The Swedes shone especially in the 3-0 win against the Urus, who, still weak in attack, now also revealed glaring weaknesses in defense. Bulgaria managed to score two points against Sweden (0-0) and Uruguay (1-1). But that wasn't enough to get ahead.
