The French national football team at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico :
qualification
France went into group 4 as the newly crowned European champion and initially lived up to its role as favorites. After defeats against Bulgaria and the GDR , however, the qualification was still in jeopardy. Only the 2-0 win in the last game against Yugoslavia brought the final qualification.

Brazil was the top favorite for the World Cup and had to admit defeat to the European champions in a penalty shoot-out. Brazilian captain Sócrates missed the first penalty , Stopyra scored the 2-1 for France, then Alemão and Amoros scored. Zico , Bellone and Branco were the next successful shooters. Then France's best man and captain Platini stepped up and missed the chance. However, the next Brazilian also forgave Júlio César . Luis Fernandez finally shot France into the semi-finals.
