Host Italy still struggled in Group A against outsiders Austria and USA in the 1-0 successes, but against the supposedly strongest opponent, the CSFR, they managed a 2-0 victory, in which the already won the match Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci, who emerged from Austria and was actually only added to the squad as a supplementary player, scored again. The Czechoslovaks trumped the USA 5-1, also kept Austria 1-0 at a distance and finished second in the group.
