In Group A, Colombia, which the great Pelé personally raised to the rank of secret favorite, was the biggest disappointment. Despite its stars like Valderrama, Asprilla, Rincon and the then Bayern striker Adolfo Valencia, the team was eliminated in the preliminary round. Switzerland, whose half of the regular eleven consisted of Bundesliga legionnaires at the time, was particularly astonishing when it came to the clear success against Romania. Romania, around its superstar Gheorghe Hagi, quickly put up with the setback, beat the hosts and advanced to the round of 16 as group winners. The US, despite its home advantage, was seen by many as a blatant outsider, but it belied its critics. The win over the clear favorites from Colombia, which came about through an own goal by Andrés Escobar, was particularly convincing.
The United States as third-best third-placed in the round of 16.
Round of 16

Brazil were under pressure as favorites against the US home team and had to play with ten men for more than one half after being sent off against Leonardo. Spain legionnaire Bebeto scored the goal of the day fifteen minutes before the final whistle.
