List of municipalities in Sweden |
Coordinates: 57 ° 42 ′ N , 11 ° 57 ′ E Göteborg is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic provinces of Västergötland and Bohuslän . The main town of the municipality is Gothenburg .
geography
The community consists largely of the city of Gothenburg and the fourth largest Swedish island Hisingen . There are also a number of smaller towns, although they usually have no more than 200 inhabitants, and the Gothenburg archipelago in the south, with the Asperö , Brännö , Donsö , Köpstadsö , Styrsö , Vargö , Vinga and Vrångö archipelagos .
history
The name Göteborgs stad was valid until 1971 when the municipalities were abolished as part of a local government reform and the new name Göteborgs kommun was introduced. On June 16, 1983, municipal representatives decided that the term city (swed. Stad ) should be used in cases in which it has no consequences for the municipality itself. For this reason there are e.g. B. on street signs both the designation Göteborgs stad and Göteborgs kommun .
