The district of Ganjam ( Oriya ଗଞ୍ଜାମ ଜିଲ୍ଲା Gañjāma Jillā ) is located in the southeast of the Indian state of Odisha . The administrative seat is the city of Chhatrapur .

location

The district extends over an area of ​​8206 km². The district extends from the Eastern Ghats to the coast of the Bay of Bengal . In the south it borders on Andhra Pradesh . The most important river in the district is the Rushikulya .

history

The district has existed since April 1, 1936. It was named after the old town and the European fortress Ganjam , both of which are located on the north bank of the Rushikulya.

The area was formerly part of the ancient Kalinga Kingdom , which dates back to 261 BC. Was occupied by Ashok. In 1757, the French commander Bussy ruled the area. In 1759 the French were ousted by the English and the area was annexed. On April 1, 1936, Ganjam was separated from the Madras presidency and became part of the newly established independent province of Orissa.

In the 2011 census, the population was 3,529,031. The gender ratio was 983 women for 1000 men. The literacy rate was 71.09% (80.99% for men, 61.13% for women). 98.78% of the population are followers of Hinduism .
