Georg Karl August Freiherr von Brandenstein (born September 9, 1827 in Enge , Switzerland ; † April 30, 1897 in Doberan ) was a Grand Ducal Mecklenburg general of the cavalry and head of the military cabinet.

Life

origin

Georg comes from the old Thuringian family von Brandenstein . His grandfather was the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg-Schwerin President and Minister August Georg von Brandenstein . He was a son of the Mecklenburg Chamberlain , captain and senior bailiff Werner von Brandenstein (1792-1862) and his wife Charlotte, née von Rieben (1792-1870). His sister Auguste (1823-1900) was married to the Prussian Major General August Paul von Kahlden .

Military career

Brandenstein attended grammar school in Friedland and the cadet house in Schwerin . After his graduation, he was transferred to the Dragoon Regiment of the Mecklenburg Army Contingent on July 1, 1847 as a portepeef ensign and was promoted to secondary lieutenant until mid-December 1847 . In 1848, during the campaign against Denmark , he took part in the battles near Bilschau and Düppel and the following year in the defeat of the Baden Revolution in the battles near Greater Saxony and Käfertal . As Prime Lieutenant , Brandenstein rose to regimental adjutant in early January 1855. From May to July 1856 he was commanded to accompany Duke Wilhelm zu Mecklenburg to Berlin. Brandenstein then accompanied him from September 1856 to August 1858 on his trip to Africa , South America and England . During this time he was initially given the character and rank of Rittmeister and was appointed squadron chief. In this position Brandenstein was commanded during the German War from June 3 to July 21, 1866 in the Prussian headquarters and took part in the battle of Königgrätz . As a result of the military convention with Prussia, he was accepted into the Association of the Prussian Army on October 10, 1868 as a lieutenant colonel and regimental commander . On June 18, 1869, Brandenstein was transferred to Berlin as commander of the Guards Cuirassier Regiment and, after being mobilized on the occasion of the war against France, was promoted to colonel . He led his regiment at Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan and Le Blanc-Mesnil as well as in front of Paris and received the Iron Cross 2nd class. After the death of Friedrich Franz II, his successor Friedrich Franz III appointed him . to head of the military cabinet. Brandenstein was awarded General of the Cavalry on April 1, 1888, and at the beginning of October 1889 with the diamonds for the Order of the Red Eagle First Class. On April 30, 1892, he took his retirement.
