Goethe badge (Hessian Ministry for Science and Art)
The Goethe badge is the highest award that the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art has been awarding at irregular intervals since 1949. It is undoped.
history
After the collapse of the National Socialist regime, the Allies forbade the wearing of military or civil medals and decorations in Germany with the Control Council Act No. 8 Art. IV of November 30, 1945. This general ban was lifted after the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany by Law No. 7 of the Allied High Commission of September 21, 1949. In the same year, the then Minister of Education, Erwin Stein, donated the Goethe plaque as an award from the Hessian Ministry of Culture. It was the very first state award after 1945.
The plaque is made of bronze and was designed by the sculptor Robert Bednorz . On the front side it shows a head portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . The back is a symbolized flying eagle. The badge is presented in a box together with a certificate.
The plaque is to be awarded to people of public or cultural life who have promoted and shaped art and culture beyond the requirements of their profession and who have made a special contribution to the cultural development of the State of Hesse through their life's work. The bearers of the Goethe plaque are named by the Hessian Minister for Science and Art.
In addition to the Goethe Prize, the city of Frankfurt am Main also awards a Goethe plaque .
