history

Success until 1987

The club, founded in 1974, rose under the new name sponsor Cantine Riunite in 1978 in Serie B and in 1982 in the second highest division A2. A year later, “Dado” Lombardi , a former national player and later a member of the Italian basketball “Hall of Fame” , took over the coaching position and won with the team that was strengthened by the former national player Giuseppe Brumatti , later also a member of the Italian Hall of Fame became, the championship of the series A2 and promotion to the top division A1. For the top division they brought the American Bob Morse back to Italy from France , who had previously celebrated great successes with Pallacanestro Varese in the European Cup and in the Italian championship in the 1970s . In the second year they qualified as ninth in the table for the first time for the play-offs for the Italian championship, in which they were eliminated in the first round of 16 against Basket Rimini . Morse then ended his active career and coach Lombardi moved to Rimini, which, however, were relegated in the 1986/87 season as bottom of the table. Reggiana, however, had to accept relegation from the top division in the relegation round in 1987.

"Elevator Team" (1987 to 1997)

After a second place in the A2 series in 1988, he was immediately promoted back to the A1 series. The US-American Kannard Johnson , who was obliged after the resurgence, switched to the German first division club TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1989 and his compatriot, the long-time center Roosevelt Bouie , who has been playing for Reggiana since 1982, to Pallacanestro Cantù and was replaced by Joe Bryant , who had previously been in the Had played NBA . In the second year of renewed membership in the first division, a ninth place was also achieved; in the play-off round of 16 they lost to Virtus Roma this time . In the third year after the ascent, history repeated itself; despite the commitment of Georgi Gluschkow , who had previously been the first Bulgarian player in the NBA, the relegation round was relegated to Serie A2.

While Bryant and Gluschkow had left the club after relegation, after a moderate season in 1991/92 in the second division the already 36-year-old American Mike Mitchell from Maccabi Tel Aviv , with whom the championship of the series A2 in 1993 and the renewed ascent succeeded. In the first season after their return they were the first in the relegation round to secure their relegation, in 1995 they went straight down to the A2 series as penultimate in the table. In the following season Gianluca Basile moved up to the first team, but they lost the final series of the promotion play-offs against Cantù, but under coach returnees Lombardi succeeded in the 1996/97 season in the final series victory against Unione Ginnastica Goriziana and the renewed promotion . A club that experiences such a rapid sequence of ascents and descents is also known as an elevator team .

European competitions and renewed elevator (1997 to 2007)

In the first season 1997/98 after the renewed promotion one reached relegation only with one win lead. The eleventh place in the table after regular time, however, entitled to participate in the qualifying round for the play-offs, where they surprisingly beat the 1996 champions, Stefanel Milan , in two games. In the quarter-finals, they defeated the 1997 champions and defending champions Benetton Treviso almost sensationally in five games . In the semifinals, however, it was the final destination in three games against the eventual runner-up Fortitudo Bologna . The semi-finals in 1998 entitled to participate in the Korać Cup , but where they eliminated in the first play-off round against Panionios Athens . After a seventh place in the main round of the national championship, they were eliminated in the qualifying round of the national play-offs in two games against Rimini. Basile then moved to Fortitudo and Mitchell ended his career. In the following season one was with the new name sponsor Bipop Carire , a merger bank from Reggio Emilia and Brescia , 2000 bottom of the table and coach Lombardi moved to Varese.

After a third place in the regular season of the A2 series, they lost the promotion play-off final series against Livorno in 2001 and in 2002 in the new second division LegADue after a first place despite the commitment of ex-national player Ferdinando Gentile against Basket Napoli . Even with the old international Stefano Rusconi , the return to the top division did not succeed in 2003. With the former basketball Bundesliga players Mauro Sartori and Kiwane Garris , however, they won first place and the LegADue championship in 2004 and thus direct promotion in the following season. Then they secured relegation with just one win, but reached the 2005 cup final with Austrian national player Benjamin Ortner , which was lost to Treviso. With the final participation one was qualified for the ULEB Cup 2005/06 , in which one was eliminated after winning the group in the preliminary round in the quarter-finals against KK Hemofarm Vršac . After missing the play-offs again, they were second to bottom in the 2006/07 season because of the poorer direct comparison and again relegated to LegADue.

Return to the top division (since 2007)

After the name sponsor Bipop Carire merged with Unicredit , the Austrian-based personnel service provider Trenkwalder International became the team's new name sponsor. In the LegADue one could not realize a promotion in the following four seasons, only in the season 2011/12 succeeded the championship with the first place after the main round and thus the direct promotion. As a climber, they reached sixth place in the 2012/13 season and thus a play-off placement, in which, however, they lost just under seven games in the first round. In the 2013/14 season they took part in a European club competition under the new name sponsor Grissin Bon , a food manufacturer from the province, and played in the EuroChallenge 2013/14 , from which they emerged as the winner.
