Gurjewsk ( Russian Гурьевск ) is a city in Kemerovo Oblast ( Russia ) with 24,817 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the west of the central part of the Kuzbass , in the foreland of the Salair ridge about 200 km south of the oblast capital Kemerovo and 30 km southwest of Belove on the river Maly Batschat . The climate is continental.
The city of Guryevsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name . The city of Salair with 8,999 and two villages with a total of 196 inhabitants are subordinate to the city, so that the total population of the administrative unit "City of Gurjewsk" is 34,734 (2009 calculation).
Guryevsk is connected to Belove on the Yurga - Novokuznetsk route and to Salair via a railway line opened in 1926 (freight traffic only) .
history
Guryevsk was established in 1815 in connection with the construction of a silver smelter , which was put into operation on November 15, 1816. In 1826 the factory was converted into an ironworks (production of cast iron ), which was initially in operation until 1908. The plant and settlement were named after the then (1810–1823) Russian Finance Minister Dmitri Gurjew , who was also responsible for the Altai mining district . After the Russian Civil War , the plant resumed production. In 1938 the place received city rights.
