Colbert Michael Hamels (born December 27, 1983 in San Diego , California ) is an American pitcher in Major League Baseball . The left-hander played in the American League with the Texas Rangers . Before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 2018 .

High school and draft

During his time in San Diego high school , Hamels was watched by a few teams. At that time, the speed of his fastball stood out, which he threw with a maximum speed of 94 mph (approx. 150  km / h ) during his school days  . However, after Hamels broke his arm in the Junior Year , some teams, including the Padres from Hamel's hometown, lost interest. Despite all of this, Hamels was elected in the first round of the 2002 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies .

Major League Baseball

2006

In May 2006 Hamels was appointed to the Phillies MLB team, where he made his debut against the Cincinnati Reds on May 12 . He pitched five innings with no earned run , allowing only one hit out of seven strikeouts. However, he also had to let five batsmen walk to first base.

2007

On May 16, 2007, Hamels made it to a perfect game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the seventh inning. There he had to let the first batsman Rickie Weeks walk to first base because of a walk, from the following batter, JJ Hardy , he even received a home run .

On July 1, Hamels was invited to the MLB All-Star Game for the first time for the National League .

2008

Against the Atlanta Braves , Hamels was able to pitch a complete game on May 15, 2008 for the first time in his career. In addition, he achieved a very good shot average for a pitcher of .250 during the season.

In Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, Hamels pitched eight strong innings with 9 strikeouts and was thus able to record the first playoff win of his career. In the National League Championship Series , Hamels was even elected MVP of the series after he was able to play two games with success and an ERA of 1.93 and thus had a large share in reaching the World Series .

World Series 2008

In Game 1 of the World Series 2008 on October 22, 2008 Hamels was used as the starting pitcher and was able to achieve the first win in the series. Hamels also started in the decisive game 5 of the series. Following his team's win in the series against the Rays, Hamels was voted MVP of the World Series .

Hamels lives in West Chester , Pennsylvania with his wife Heidi Strobel . His parents Gary and Amanda Hamels still live in San Diego.
