Season course
The handball league began on September 6, 1987 and ended with the last game on April 2, 1988. As usual, ten teams participated, including the five long-established sports clubs. With a win on the last matchday at defending champion ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / O. After 1984, SC Leipzig secured its fourteenth GDR championship title. The ASK and SC Empor Rostock, which had no loss points in the second half of the season, came in with equal points . The games decided against each other about the final placement of the two teams. Of the two climbers Lokomotive Rangsdorf and the company sports community (BSG) Blaue Schwerter Meissen, only Rangsdorf was able to hold eighth place in the class. Meissen, who couldn't win a point, was relegated to second class after only one year. They were accompanied by the BSG Einheit / Sirokko Neubrandenburg after a two-year guest performance.
